So Hitachi is getting into the NAS game now too.

So far no reviews but pictures show they are made in Thailand where WD has a facility.

One might assume they are just RED's inside a different package but they are 7200 and RED's are roughly 5900k.

Hitachi seems to be hit and miss when it comes to reliability, then again RED's have a pretty shitty track record so far.

Just got 12 of the 4TB ones, none DOA, pleasant surprise...
Two of them didn't start up on the initial hot-plug, but re-seating fixed that. Will have to watch those two.

All were made in Thailand in December 2013 and have same firmware.

Plan is to have 9 in a raid 6 array, two in raid 1, and a global hot spare. Raid card is a 9271-8iCC.

Seem good so far, but time will tell whether they stay in the array reliably.

Thanks for the post Xamayon. Trying to figure out whether to buy two of these or two WD Red 4TB for a new 2 bay Synology diskstation.
 
Thanks for the post. I was interested in the SE line but being OEM and how poorly drives are packaged and shipped buying retail should give you a much better chance of receiving a non-DOA.

If you get a chance could you do some benches with HDtune, crystal, etc and post them?

I still cannot find any whitepaper on this drive to know if it's 1TB/platter or not.

Both this and red's have 3 year warranty but reds are 5900 and have some of the slowest latency due to spindle speed.

I will say the price is very good, 3TB is $150, 4TB is $200 so basically 50 bucks per 1TB.
 
Retail packaging on Amazon was the same price as OEM on NewEgg, so I went with Amazon. No quantity limit sealed the deal.

Even with 12 going all out they are very quiet and are running reasonably cool.

Benchmarks done with a single newly formatted 4TB disk in JBOD mode on the 9271-8iCC. The server/controller is slightly busy copying data between arrays at the moment, (can't be stopped) but that should not have much impact on these numbers.

Looks pretty decent actually. It would be safe to say seeing as HGST was first with a 1TB/platter that is what they are using plus
the fact these drives appear to be based on the latest deskstar but with firmware tuned for NAS and probably raid.

Their new He drives have 6 platters packed into a 3.5 for 6TB which is nuts.

Both amazon and NE the packaging should both be retail box just as you bought them, both have the same price too.

I doubt these will go on sale, still too new without any customer feedback yet.

I have not had a HItachi drive since way back when they were IBM and I had a 40G deskstar with the fiberglass platters.

It never failed but it did get a few bad sectors along the way.

My worry is how easily it is to RMA to Hitachi if you did have a problem. WD seems to be the easiest, Seagate is more difficult.

Thanks, guess they are using the same platter tech that WD is using on their enterprise drives then, 800.

I did round up this though:

5v,12v power draw according to the label on the drives.

SE 1.15amp
NAS 1.30 amp

So either the HGST is using a more powerful motor or the platters are heavier and thus making the motor work harder.

More amps means more heat, probably not much but slightly more.

It's possible since it's 7200 it's really a SE inside a Hitachi case with a heavily reduced price but in reality it's just a standard deskstar with firmware tuned for NAS applications.

I miss the days when drive were what they really were.

The 3TB should be 3.2TB just as back in the day when Seagate and WD were using 320GB platters you had 320/640 and before that with 250's you had 250/500/750.

One of the platters or all of them are being short stroked, logically with 4 they are slicing off 50mb per each to get to that nice round number of 3TB.

Hitachis reliability in my experience is much more hit than the competition, which is more hit and miss in my experience, I just hope this is a "proper" hitachi-drive, not some rebadged WD.
 
Least they are made in Thailand which could be a WD plant as they have one of their main plants there.
I'd be suspect of the Chinese made Hitachi's.

As nice as it would be to have a 1TB/platter 7200 the reliability does not appear to be there, probably one of the reasons for the high failure rates of Seagates now.

Did some checking and the label on the NAS is almost exactly the same as the 7K4000, in fact the same "type" is labeled on both, DK7SAF400.

A pro test of the 7K4000 mirrors what Xamayon benched give or take.

Deskstars are also not designed to be 24/7 or put in raid like the ultrastar version is.
Then again most NAS boxes are on 24/7 so this drive might have some ultrastar features.

Still not a damn thing on their site about this new drive which seems really odd.

just ordered 12 of these today. i'll chime in once i put them into the case
 
These drives start out fast but as they fill up they really slow down badly. I have two 3TB at 80% full and transfers now are in the 50mb range dropping as low as 30mb with long transfers.

By comparison my 5 year old WD black drive filled 85% actually pulls higher numbers with crystaldiskinfo.

New I was pulling 165 read and write, now it's around 95 read and write.
 
I bought mine about a month ago, at that time they did not have this information but they do now.
Still not as complete as WD when they list their drive stats though.

They run cool and do not consume that much power but as stated once they fill up they do slow down more then they should compared to say a RE drive.

Then again the same size RE drive will cost twice the price so it's a compromise.
