Well after talking to mix, he talked me into making a introduction thread. Yep....

So hey guys, whats up, i go by Change, some of you might know me from drawball(I'm an artist on there and help fix up the [H] when needed.) and I've decided to start folding(i have 1 computer and 2 laptops idling away doing nothing, should put them to good use) so i was just going to ask a few quick questions if people don't mind. As well as see if it is worth it on one of my computers to run it, and what i can do to make these computers use every last resource to do stuff, while still not totally frying them lol.

The two main ones ill have running out of my 4 computers have these stats:

Main Notebook:
Pentium 4 CPU 3.60 GHz and 2 GB's RAM

The other one i never use that just sits and collects dust:
Pentium 4 CPU 1.80GHz 512M RAM

How can i tweak the computer i never use to get the most out of it?

Also while putting the folding program on the 2 laptops(they have vista.. ew) noticed that the displaying version of the folding@home program doesn't want to run on them, is there a fix for that? or should i just run the command prompt version on those?

I know some people will just tell me to go to the FAQ and so forth, but its much better asking for me as ill get to talk to you guys as well. =P

Might as well just go w/ the console F@H. The display just sits there and draws pretty (and meaningless) pictures.

As for tweaking the one laptop? Uninstall all active programs that don't need to be run. I've got an Athlon XP rig running < 30 processes just for Folding@Home, and could probably go down even more. Anything not running is one less program that can't interfere with F@H :)

Is there a way i can force the console to minimize into the system tray?

Also anyone got a guide(or can send me a pm or anything) on how i can set up vista to allow me to access the other console on the vista laptop with FAHspy or FAHmon?(honestly i could do it if it were xp, but after looking up tons of information dealing with vista and networking on google, i drew a blank)

Open Ststem Properties and check thart the work group is the same on all computers you want to link together.

Then open Network & Shring Center.
Turn on ...
Network Discovery.
File Sharing.
Public Folder <- not sure you need to turn that one on.

Now Disk Properties.
Sharing and add your share in there.

I'm not sure if you need to alter anything in Windoze Firewall or not.
Mines set as a private network.

If everything works you should now be able to see the drive on the second computer from the first.
At the bottom of the Network & Security Center you can get it to show you your shared folders.

Once you can see the drive then just point FahSpy at the folding folder and your good to go.
If my boxen's name is "Tiger-Boxen" then the share would be "Tiger" and the folding folder is called "SMP".
This make the path to it "\\Tiger-Boxen\Tiger\SMP".

Luck ................ :D

I don't know about minimizing to the system tray, but I run the console client as a service and it works like a charm, invisible, and folding proteins whether someone is logged on or not.

FahMon works well for monitoring multiple clients on a single machine, or on a LAN. I set it up the other day at work, and within minutes I had 15 CPUs reporting back.

Fold on!

First, thanks for all the help on DrawBall, espcially with the idiot obsessed with drawing pubic hair all over it:rolleyes:

Run the command line version, it's faster and makes best use of what is available.Since you are only going to run the single clients go to advanced settings during the client setup and set your RAM limit to 256, limiting RAM actually helps as long as you don't to too low.

I start mine in quick launch then minimize to the status bar which I set to hidden by default. Running as a service works well, but in either case don't forget to add -forceasm to the command line as this speeds things up a bit. It's espcially important if you run as a service since you can't see if the program has errored out or not.

Welcome aboard and enjoy;)
