Ground Breaking stuff! Coming soon, now say "Hey Google," instead of "OK Google." Personally I think it should be set to say whatever the hell you want. I would name my phone Mr. Poopybutthole, just so I could say in the middle of that most-important meeting, "Hey Mr. Poopbutthole, please set a reminder for ..... "


Anyway, it was working on my Pixel 2 last night and I have to say, "Hey" is better than "OK."

I hope this is better than the current google assistant. I hated the new "ok google assistant" rather than the plain old "ok google" which seemed to have more functionality. Found a hack that if I set my language to "english - guam" I could go back to the old "ok google". Plus it also gave me a british sounding lady instead of normal robot voice lady.

With that being said. I love how it only recognizes your voice when talking to it. I use the Google assistant a lot more frequently now.

My wife randomly yells shit at my phone when I use OK Google. She sits back chuckling as if it worked. I won't tell her if you don't!

As it was outlined to me today it is only being rolled out in very limited terms. New Pixel 2 here, so I think they are giving us first run. Now they just need to let us say whatever the hell we want.....I am serious about the Mr. Poopybutthole thing...

We had a discrete DSP chipset that ran in a low power state and was always matching audio against the "launch phrase". That phrase could have been anything you wanted to teach the DSP. As soon as it got a match in the DSP, it would save the following audio in a buffer and parse it locally to check for local commands, then send it to Google's server to check for wider Google commands. It is my understanding that Google did not like the local parsing of commands at all and wanted 100% of it done on the server side. That had the effect of increasing command lag and requiring an internet connection to do simple things like play/pause media.

I'm not sure how it's done now, but I personally miss the local parsing of simple commands. It was very fast and reliable.
