Heroes V

i thought 4 was pretty crappy, but i still thoroughly enjoy 3 quite alot, i hope this goes off of three more then four =/

sigh I loved Heros games but I am going to skip this one because of the starforce crap :(

Have you guys played the open-beta yet? As of yesterday you could sign up and download if you were a subscriber to Gamespy, but as of Thursday ( Jan26,2006 ) anyone and their brother can sign up.

Shacknews has a link to the Ubisoft forums where you can sign up.

I personally haven't tried the OB, for two reasons
1) the beta has starforce on it, and I really dont' want to mess with it anymore
2) it is MP only :(

the beta has starforce on it,

What is 'starforce'?

Also, I can agree on the online part, sometimes it takes FOREVER for your enemy to make a move. I haven't played the series since III, but I might go and pick this up if I like the beta enough.

Starforce is a very effective but troublesome copy protection. you can find out more about it by googling. But basically any starforce protected games will install a hidden driver on your system that can mess up your burners if you have any.

Oh and most games won't unistall it when you unistall the game

I've tried to play the beta. I've played 4 games so far where I haven't even gotten a turn as the player I'm against drops after completeing theirs, or timing out, or something.

The beta isn't that great anyhow, you can't change sound options and the default hates Audigy/Audigy 2. Graphics are decent though. I have no clue how the gameplay is.

Oh shit, it does have starforce, hated it :( . I could not install anything after, damn. But I think I will still try the game, looks pretty freakin sweet, graphicwise.

You are a much more tolerant man then i can ever be. i have been burnt twice by starforce, and started a self ban... But i digress.

please let us know how the game feels, game play wise.

thanks

:) Anybody know teh release date on it?
And starforce was not so bad at first, but then it gets idiotic. Maybe Heroes V will have some sort of updated version of it with less bugs....

This may sound like i am banging the drum, but I agree. All ubisoft games are employing this protection now AFAIK :( I'm with ya, i don't need the headaches.

Thank you! I downloaded the beta and got the key. I haven't installed it yet - thank goodness. Now it gets deleted forever. That crap is not allowed on my machine - period.

Copy protection - espeically SF - on a beta/demo is about the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. Grr!

Do any petitions or boycotts exist against starforce? Why would ubisoft be implementing it if it causes so many problems? Seems like theres nothing but negative feedback on it.

I've never encountered any problems with StarForce, but I hear of lots of cases. I thought it was interesting that the company that makes StarForce put out this challenge here.

On another note, I played Heroes 1-3 to death, but 4 definently lost my interest. I am looking forward to this, so I'll probably check out the beta.

As I said Starforce is retarded and it goes for all programs like that. But the reality is that more and more games will have something like that installed, might as well get used to it if you want to continue PC Gaming. I will definatelly get the game, unless Starforce gives me tons of shit again I will probably play till the disk burns

WTF was that

Heroes 1 - rocked

Heroes 2 - The best in the series - I loved the opera music in the castles.

Heroes 3 - underground land made the maps take too long and the elemental heroes in the expansion? WHAT THE HECK? they were worthless...but overall still the 2nd best title.

Heroes 4 - Is this even the same game? How did they mess up such a great legacy so thoroughly????

Heroes 4 = the suck...I couldn't even complete a single map cause it stunk so bad....My buddies and I that used to play multiplayer with Heroes 1, 2, and 3 like constantly and still play 2, and 3 to this day (in fact a couple of hot seat maps each time we get together) all couldn't stand Heroes 4. Because of that huge disgrace (4) I'm not too excited about 5....but I guess we'll see.

In a somewhat unrelated note. I heard that the devs of UFO Aftershock is going to get a non starforce protected downloadable version of the game out to gamers... So looks like some devs do listen, and appreciate gamer's conerns with intrusive copy protection schemes.

So there is hope yet for HOMM5!!!

Read my link, it's the company that makes StarForce and their somewhat cheesy challenge. But I guess it does say something about their confidence in their product

Heh the funny thing is for me on this one, I won't ever know how this game will be other reading other people's opinions on it. The same will go with any game publisher that buys a license to put starforce protection on their games.

I'm not going to make them out to be the villains because after all it is their choice to try and protect thier contents with it, but yet again I'm not exactly going to want to set the precedent for them by buying there game and allowing this starforce's driver system to reside on my pc even when I don't have the game installed.

It's that principle that bothers me not so much the invasive starforce program itself that the game publisher will not get a sold copy through me. Maybe hopefully they can re-evaluate how the driver system works so it can uninstall itself without me having to do it manually and that would be fine but until they do, well I guess I can do without.

And that's a shame because I think game looks to be very nice but again I won't ever experience it so I hope it turns out to be as good as it looks.

Totally agree with you man. Heroes 2 was definitely the best, I can still remember some of the music.

I like this game a lot pending the sound crackling problem and general beta bugs being fixed...however as a demo it has one fatal flaw.....NO SINGLE PLAYER?!?!

You HAVE to play multiplayer...here's the thing, I played on a 1 v 1 map and we were playing for 7 hours practically...because turns take so long. If my opponent takes on some computer army/monster, I have to sit there and wait. Because of this, turns take forever.

The game would be good singleplayer though and the game is bright and very detailed. I imagine seeing it at a higher res than 1024 x 768 would look real nice since it looks well this way.

Bookmarked that page, even though I can't afford to buy all those SWEET looking games. At least it'l motivate me to upgrade my computer.
