I am tired of being belittled by my obnoxious "friend" so he could justify his purchase from his "computer savvy" neighbor.

Id like to hear again hardforum's unbiased opinions towards these debates we had over the past few weeks because he just wont listen to me. He just really wanna push away my other friend from the idea of me assembling his build(free of charge)

A week ago he started blabbing about FPS. Him being an console gamer, he says that anything over 60fps is useless and theres no difference between 60fps vs 60-120fps(or over). Then he said that mid-range cards can run the most extensive games in the market, which he says is "Crysis 2", at 60fps so buying a high-end card would be "use-less".

He said that when I was talking to Friend A(customer) about the gpu im putting in his system( 670/7970).So in my defense, I said that Crysis 2 isnt even, as he calls it, " the harderst game to run" I told him I personally play on 2 machines that run it at 250fps and 80fps and I see a large difference, especially in FPS games. He just kept blatantly insisting to the point that he stood up and walked out( I called him an idiot so that could be the reason...). I suspect he keeps defending this because he said his "neighbor" told him hes getting a mid-range card in his gaming system. This contradicts the fact that his "neighbor" built him a system with a gtx 570 that he bought 1-2 years ago.(saw the build in his house personally so I know this for a fact)

I went to his home to move his old hdd to a new desktop they got with a broken hdd. I had him help me so I explained to him how esd can damage components so he had to be careful where he places the hdd because he was gonna put it on top of a table cloth.

Today he started giving me lectures about ESD. How I was wrong and that he asked his "neighbor" about static discharge and the neighbor said its not a problem with parts nowadays. He kept defending what he said that, Quote:"Static doesnt affect computer parts NOW and that it was more prone back in the days". I showed him an article online through my phone about ESD and he says it doesnt count because the article was from 1997. Then he kept saying random shit about volts( I dont even know what he was saying and I take a computer electronics class)...how static discharge from a person has so little volts that it wont affect components. I know this isnt true because even unfelt discharge of static can damage parts especially the cpu and gpus.

It really just pisses me off having arguments with someone who has no idea nor prior experiences to this topic, especially something Im passionate about. I get this alot but this one is the most persistent case Ive seen so far.

This a bit more debatable as it's largely dependent on what he and you considers a "mid-range card", what resolution, and what game. With that said, some people do consider the GTX 570 as a mid-range card.

Crysis 2 is not the most "high-end" game on the market right now. As for the human eye 60FPS+ debate, that's been debated ad nauseum all throughout the forum with pretty much no resolution. All I can say is that some people can tell the difference and some can't.

While current PC hardware can handle ESD a tad better than older generation parts, ESD can still damage PC parts. It's very subtle damage and therefore can easily be misdiagnosed as a different issue altogether. As that 1997 article being too old, there's still a section about ESD in the 2009 Comptia A+ Exams. So in other words, it's still a large enough concern for a computer certification to test you on.

In addition, what's the harm in taking the extra steps/time to avoid ESD? Unless you're monumentally lazy, incompetent, or just don't care about the PC, it's not that big of a deal to take the extra time to avoid ESD damage, especially if it's a client's PC. Plausible deniability and all that.


With all of that said, I say just call him out on him trying to justify his purchase. Just tell him you don't give a fuck about what he does with his money and to stop trying to get you to make him feel better about his purchase. Or in more diplomatic terms: "Agree to disagree".

Yes, your friend and the neighbor of his are a bit uneducated expecially when the inet has all the info they could ever want on the subject.
