Depends on whether or not you OC.

I have drivers for Hard Drive that only go in via floppy
 
i guess if it ever came down to it and i had to have one, i could always get an external USB. right??

It would be cheaper to buy a floppy + internal drive than it would be to get an external drive.

2 of them.... the dual pack was 50$ more just b/c they come in the same case.... so i did 2 512's.... it says 2 of them! :D
 
i can add a floppy no biog deal.... but i was told they're not really inportant if your OS is a CD.... but ill get one n e hows....

What do you guys think about me spending so much for a 1st time build... some other people seem to think i shouldnt spend so much b/c its my first build.. but, what can really go wrong that i could ruin the chips/cars or whatever... i know i could install the fans/heatsinks wrong.. or i could no ground myself and do some static damage... but if im careful and avoid these types of things, i should be fine, right?
 
Yea you should be fine. The first thing to start with assuming the processore is installed, is setting the jumper settings on the mobo. I would go out a buy another stick of memory. You need a gig for optimal gaming etc...

GUYS READ CAREFULLY!!! i have a gig, and have had it from the start (notice no edits on post) it says "( 2 of them.. 1024 total ram)"

please, some one go into detail on these "jumpers" . most people say i wont have to do anything to them. and some say i will have to set them... which worries me b/c i dont even know what a jumper is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not only will you have to set the jumpers, but you also may need to set the "speed ratio valve to 26:1" :p then after all that is done, you'll have a great system. :D

Those drivers are only to install an overlay IF you motherboard is not new enough to support the large capacity drives.

I dont think he will have that problem.

BTW: I hope you didnt use the drive overlay software...they pretty much kill any performance of the drive.


Now, as for using SATA drives, you may need a floppy to be able to load the SATA device driver in XP during the install. Going IDE will never require doing that.

im using IDE (i think its called that). so that wont be a factor
 
You might want to buy a .09micron 3200+ on a s939 mobo. And I swear I hate all you people that try to downplay the need of the floopy drive!

It costs 10 dollars and what else do you plan on doing with that part of the pc? How are you going to be able to transfer a file from one pc to another when not on the network or something? Dont tell me you plan on burning a whole 4byte word doc file to a cd LMAO lol. Done ranting about the floopy drive...

well i thought my build was done but newegg just sold out of the PS i wanted... which got me to thinking... i want to change my case... the new case im looking at has a 450wtt PS, but it might be a junk POS PS.... could u take a look at this case from newegg, and let me know what u think about it, and the PSU it comes with?? in one of the pictures it gives all the details on the PSU.. well here is the link

Building a new computer is a journey. There will always be parts out of stock, and you'll hit bumps along the road as you go.

You need the floppy. I used mine for
1. Scsi drive install, only works with a floppy.
2. Memtest.org, boots computer from a floppy and runs the test from it.

this guy is messing with you # 1

#2 - most motherboards are completely configurable from the BIOS (software). And do not require ANY tinckering with the jumpers.
 
You really should get something other than Samsung hard drives. Maxtor and Western Digital are the only smart choice. Some people may say Seagate. However with Seagate you should only go SCSI or SATA. Regular EIDE drives made by them are crap.

I work in a service center and I see more dead Seagates than anything else. I do see quite a few issues with Fujitsu and Samsung drives too. Not so much with them dying but they've got massive compatibility issues with systems.

Don't get me started on Hitachi/IBM Deathstar drives.

i got a western digital one,.. i changed it! lol

what about that PS, should i be worried abou tit?? can i use it for a ferw months and change it down the line?? should i really worry abou tit?
 
The build looks pretty good, personally I would get a 74GB Western Digital Raptor SATA HD, unless you really need 160 GB of storage, and a DFI Lanparty UT nF3 250Gb mother board. Also....I wouldn't get the Windows XP Home Edition with service pack 2...service pack 2 has been known to cause a lot of problems on Athlon 64 systesm, stay away from it! :eek:

where do u suggest i get a version of windows with out it then??? i really cant spend more then 100$ on my OS... so im up for suggestions eternity...
 
What problems are caused by SP2 on the Athlons? Maybe on Via mobos?
Also, if its a no-execute problem... like with certain encoders... the simple answer is turn off XD (execute disable) thing, right click on the computer and its under one of the tabs. uncheck it.

The only other problem I've heard about with SP2 is it's integrated firewall. (which should be turned off & replaced with ZoneAlarm) That it can break functionality of internet applications... which need to be specifically let through with Winder's new firewall.

Anyway, overall nice build, though, go buy it and build it.

Just remember if it doesnt all power up, the 1st or 2nd time... to relax and calm down.... thats very common.

Make sure everything is inserted properly, (videocard & ram, being the #1 culprit). And try again..... it will probably work then! :) had that happen so many times on my 1st few builds and I would freak out!!
 
Yeah I would suggest a socket 939 board as well, more upgradibility in the long run. Also if you're dead set on not using any SATA or RAID or anything like that you MIGHT not need a floppy drive, but I would get one anyway. You can always use a USB flash drive to transfer files, but if someone has an old school floppy and wants to use your comp to work on something for a while, they'll be unhappy when they can't find the floppy drive. My 2 cents
 
I like it looks good to me. However, I would look into S939 and the 3200+ 939. Not that much of a price diffrence and a big gain in performance.

My thoughts exactly. I have a 3200+ .09 on it's way to my house right now because of this review... (not entierly) http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=getarticle&number=2&artpage=905&articID=230
but it's a sick preformer and agreed on the Gig'o RAM. If you plan to have this thing for a while a 939 board is gunna be around for a while while 754 been out of the picture for a while. And with that ROM... DVD buriners are like $60 and CD burners for $40... no reason not to upgrade a little there.

The ONLY time i have ever used a floppy disk outside of a win98 install was for drafting class.
I use a USB thumbdrive for small files, all computers i use are win2k or newer wich is preloaded with the drivers. I have no drivers by floppy either outside of my circa 1999 20gb maxtor.
