I just got a new computer, core 2 duo E6600, gtx7900, 2GB ram.
I use maya for visual effects work, and sometimes when I render a frame, my computer just shuts off. Also when playing counterstrike, the game will crash every 30 minutes or so. here is a screenshot of SpeedFan results... http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o189/X14Halo/iancomputer.jpg

Since i don't know much about computer tempurature, fans, etc...could someone look at it and tell me what is wrong and how I can fix it. Thank you.

What kind of a power supply are you using? Brand, wattage, model #?

What RAM?

Wow 60'c Idle...

You're overheating, I'm almost certain. The limit for those processors is like 65'c, and you're sitting at 60 on idle! Most people idle in the 40's.

Remove the old Thermal paste (70% or higher alcohol) and apply some AS5 under that Heatsink!

Following the AS5 instructions, of course.

ok well i just rendered something with maya and the temp jumped to 80C so thats not good lol. my power supply is OCZ modstream 600w by the way. So do u guys have any recommendations for heatsinks to buy for this setup? thanks

Christ dude, recheck your heat sink asap. It might be not sitting right either. Also if its running at 80c do a physical check by placing ur hand on the heat sink. Download "coretemp" its alot more accurate compared to other programs.

Your power supply is obviously not the problem here.

Yes, reseat the HSF with some good thermal paste.

I doubt you have it on there right! If you DO, then you NEED to RMA that processor!!!

Is the fan running? are all the clips pushed in as FAR as they can go?

Figured it out i think. Heatsink just wasn't pushed in all the way. Now it has only gone up to like 38 C max. yay :) thanks for your help and suggestions.

by the way...since it has been up to such high tempuratures for the past month or so (83 C and up), that wouldn't have ruined my processor would it?

It might have damaged it a bit...

But I honestly doubt it!

It shuts off if things go awry, as you'vve experienced ;).
