CPU is unworkable or has been changed. Please recheck CPU SOFT MENU

i bought a zalman7000A ...first time i tried to run the comp the fan didnt work (i was using the fan controler at the time) so i took the fan controller off and plug the fan directly to a power source, fan worked.

I shutdown the PC IMMEDIATELY as a turned it on (if that makes sence) so i doubt the CPU fried.

any ideas?

P.S. the CPU isnt hot...checked in the bios.

That is an ABIT mb yes? go into the BIOS and setup softmenu so that it is a the default processor speed.

Or if you want to overclock, disable "speed errror hold"

Usually a harmless message. Generally happens if you remove the CPU from the socket.

Reset the BIOS/CMOS jumper.

aight cool.

now dudes .... my CPU is at about 47C....witht his zalman...thats messed up.

Its cooler than the stock CPU cooler, indeed, but not by much.

the RPM of the CPU fan is about 2600.

Thermal paste needs time to set. And make sure you use good thermal paste.

When I switched from stock cooler to zalman cnps7000, I think I went down about 5 degrees idle temp (zalman + Arctic Silver 5). I idle at 44 C usually, but in the hot summer months, my room is about 30 C, and I idle at around 47 - 48 C.

It's also good if you lap the heatsink (which I didn't do) for that extra degree or two.

Oh, and Abit mobos misreport temps a little high.

im a noob, but i cant seem to find this ''softmenu'' in my bios. Yes, it is an ABIT board.

lap?

see, i used the stuff that came w/ the heatsink as far as greece. Put a dot, layed the Heatsink on there, turned left and right, then screwed. Dunno if it just needs time to settle or what.
The dot i put on at first was about the size of a BB and a half.

Softmenu is Abit's name for its software overclocking interface in BIOS.

The stuff like FSB controls and CPU voltage are part of softmenu.

edit edit:

The stuff that comes with the Zalman heatsink is crap. You'll definitely get better results with some quality paste.

And lapping is the process of smoothing and removing any unevenness from contacting surface of the heatsink.

The zalman sinks are usually pretty smooth, but just saying for a suggestion.

yo billy,

can i just ''load optimized defaults'' to fix this error? i cant get the battery outta the mobo, and i am not sure how to reset jumpers. I also see the voltage and such under PC Health Status and SotfMenu Setup

hmm, what is ''good quality paste'' and how much will it affect performance?

Yeah, loading the defaults will work.

What mobo do you have? You can also get the manual online at Abit's site and find out where the BIOS jumper is.

As for good paste. I recommend Arctic Silver 3 or 5. It helps drop cpu temps if you apply it correctly (follow directions). Probably $5 a tube, will last you a while.
