Ok, I leave my rig running while I am at work. I get home and I got a start up screen with the words " DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER". So I can't get to my windows screen. I am thinking that my hard drive with my operating system has died. It is a 200 GB western digital SATA that is less than a year old. Is it a physical problem, like its broken, or could it be someone hacked my stuff and corrupted my operating system? Sorry to ask such a noob question, but this has never happened to me before. If it is just a matter of formatting it and reinstalling windows, I got that. But if it is likely broken, then I will have to buy a new one or try to get some satisfaction from newegg. Thanks so much for your wisdom!
 
Run a SMART tool, speedfan can check hard disk health. You'll have to put the hard drive in a PC that can boot though.
 
1 - check power and data cables. replace/substitute them if possible.

2 - Check to see if the drive is recognized in BIOS.

3 - If recognized, then connect it as a secondary if possible and recover your files (pr0n).

4 - check the drive for bad sectors. I f you don't have another rig to do this then run chkdsk from the OS CD/DVD. You could even use a win xp CD in the recovery console and run this command: chkdsk /p/r. This will check for errors and repair them.

5 - If nothing is found format the drive and re-install.

6 - If all else fails, RMA the drive.
 
ok, here is where I am at> I got out my previous hard drive and plugged it in, it still had XP pro installed. I got the same message, so I hit enter a few times with my windows XP boot disc in the DVD drive and it started up. SO i am still gettting the message, but when I use the bootdisc in the discdrive, i can start up my previous hard drive. I find it odd that I am getting the same message no matter which hard drive I use. I will start checking the items listed above, thank you for the help. let me know if this further info points you in a new direction, I will check back shortly.

how do I get to the recovery console and use the XPcd to check for bad sectors??
 
probably a goofy question/recommendation... but make sure you don't have any disks/discs in any removable media drives (e.g. floppy, CD-ROM, etc). Also make sure you don't have any USB media attached at boot and then try to reboot again.
 
I have had this happen twice, and both times was a hard drive problem. Once out of the two times, I was lucky a repair worked and didnt loose any data, the second time all was lost. If you didnt back up and trying to recover the other members can better help you with that. If nothing is important on it, just reformat and reinstall.

i got everything backed up< i just want to know if the hard drive itself is bad, or if the OS is corrupted somehow and I need to reformat and reinstall.....

ok, final call, hard drive is bunk. put in my older one with XP Pro and it is working fine, the one that went bad sounds like there is gravel inside it. I will try to RMA since it is less than 6 months old...
