I'm new to overclocking but I figured I'd try my hand at it. I read the Maximum PC guide and Cecil's guide, but I ended up going with the "conservative" OC BIOS settings for my first overclock.

I have a i7 930 on a Gigabyte X58 UD3R w/ Corsair 650w PSU. RAM is Gskill Ripjaws 6Gb 1.6v.

I went into my BIOS and changed the following settings:

Vcore I set to 1.35v
QPI voltage @ 1.3v
Base clock to 160Mhz
QPI multi I'm pretty sure I set to 12 because I figured my RAM multi was 6 (possibly this was uncore instead of QPI multi)

I'm pretty sure I might have left the memory multiplier at auto, but I changed the DRAM voltage to 1.6v.

Well now my computer won't boot at all. It starts up and runs with a black screen for about 5 seconds then shuts off and reboots, over and over.

What should I do? I can't even access my BIOS or anything at this point.

P.S. If anyone will to help has an IM program and is willing to help me via chat I would REALLY appreciate that as well. I'm new to this overclocking and hopefully didn't fry my brand new computer!

Read the manual for your motherboard especially the part about how to reset the cmos. Usually involves moving a jumper on the board to reset all the bios options to factory defaults. It should reboot then unless you over-volted something (unlikely given your list changes) and broke something.
 
Read the manual on resetting the BIOS using the CMOS jumper/button. Or just pull the battery on the board out for about 5 minutes and then install it again and turn the computer on. Be aware settings would most likely be default after this.


Alternatively sometimes just holding the power button for a few seconds till the computer is turned off. Let sit for a minute and turn on again will sometimes let you get back up and running. Not always though.
 
Thank you guys I will try resetting CMOS via the jumper first. Once it's back up and running perhaps I can review some of my exact BIOS changed with you and perhaps get them set correctly. I think I must have set something wrong, because these were the recommended "conservative OC" settings from the MaximumPC i7 OC guide.
 
Ok I reset the CMOS with a button on the back panel (that was easy!).

I would still like to try and overclock a little bit, but I don't quite know what I did wrong or set wrong. Did anyone notice anything set incorrectly?

Perhaps I should make a new thread asking for specific values for this motherboard's BIOS?
 
i was able to hit 3.5 GHz on my i5 with 1.18 vcore and 1.15 Vtt . base clock is 166 x21. i didnt change anything else and its running stable
i have ram at x8 to be running at 1333. every time i tried to run the ram faster than it was rated the comp crashed. the performance gains weren't worth the work to me for the ram.
what is your ram rated? 1600?
 
yeah my ram is 1600, which i got it running at that via BIOS

A weird thing happened though. I redid my OC settings and it worked this time, I must have forgotten something.

I booted into win7 and CPU-Z told me my CPU was @ ~3.5GHz, however, after running Prime95 for about 30 minutes and then playing some Crysis, CPU-Z is now telling me that my CPU is running at 1908MHz instead of the 3.5 it should be at, and the multiplier is at 12 instead of 22, but the bus speed remained what I set it at (159MHz). The Vcore is still the same, too. And my RAM OC is where it should be, running at 1590 and 1.6v.

What would cause this to happen? I didn't restart or anything. Can something cause my CPU to automatically step down in speed? This is lower than the default speed of the CPU!

P.S. this is after my CMOS reset AND after a subsequent re-overclocking to 3.5Ghz. What's going on?

UPDATE: I restarted my computer for the first time after overclocking and running P95 and Crysis to check that my BIOS settings hadn't reverted. They were fine, right where I had set them for the OC. I boot back into Win7 and run CPU-Z again, and now it's back to 3.5GHz with the 22x multiplier. I proceeded to run P95 again for about 5 minutes. While it was running I kept checking with CPU-Z, and everything remained OC'ed. However, after I closed P95 and re-ran CPU-Z it was back to 1.9GHZ and 12x multiplier. Restarted again, surfed the internet for about 5 minutes, opened CPU-Z, and it was back to 1.9GHz. Any ideas why it's dropping down?

UPDATE 2: Well I'm stupid. This appears to be simple throttling. If I put the CPU to use it quickly goes back to the OC speed. Sorry!

who the hell uses ICQ anymore? or takes overclocking advice from maxim magazine for that matter...

OP- instead of people telling you what settings might work, it would be much better for you to learn about why changing one setting does what it does before you go messing around like you are. that way when something breaks in the future, you can go back and logically work it out, step by step. just browse the forums for while, look for people with similar hardware as you and see what they can get out of it. if you find a term you dont know, throw it into google.
 
sent you a link that might help, google for a bios oc settings template's for the 920+ud3r i''m sure u'll find many. they'll give you an idea about what to change. oh ghost said it.
