ok so when i turn on my computer it goes through the normal things, the boot picture, then the system info POST screen, then it goes to a black screen that says "verifing DMI pool data" then it says "success" and that is immeadiatly followed by "Disc Read error occured Press ctrl+alt+del to restart" i restart and the same thing happens. then i popped a ubuntu disc in to live boot and the same error came up (i only enabled the DVD-RW boot and not HDD or floppy). so i unplugged the HDD and when it got to the "verifing DMI pool data" part it booted into ubuntu. i tried to access the HDD from ubuntu but it said that it was not accessable. so is the HDD dead? i just got the mobo back from RMA today and it was the same one i sent in.

i am not computer illeterate but i just cant figure out what is going on.

Alright...

It seems that the hard drive is failing - since a google of 'disk read error' seems to be that the hard drive is about to crash for good, but could be something else. You need to answer these questions:

Any important data on there?
Also what was on the hard drive? Was Windows on it? What version?
What were you doing before this problem occurred?

Answering those questions may allow us to help you out some more...

On a side note:
Well you said that you unplugged the hard drive and then you were able to boot into the live CD of ubuntu then continued on that the hard drive could not be seen. That would happen, seeing as the hard drive was unplugged.
However, if you plug it back in, you can't boot into ubuntu on the CD? Are you sure you set the first boot device in the bios to the DVD drive?

Also... I would change your title of the post to something other than HELP!!!!!! - The capital letters make it seem like you are being rude and the exclamation points do not help either. A more informative title would help you out loads more, something along the lines of Hard Drive gets Disk Read Error. Can anybody help?

ok ill change the title. even if the HDD is off the boot list it still gives me the error. i have to unplug the HDD to get into ubuntu. but after the DMI pool data check thing and before i boot into ubuntu i plug it back in. ubuntu recognizes it but i get an error when i try to access it. i dont know if this helps but a couple days before i had put in a stick of OCZ RAM along with my super talent RAM. i dont think this did anything but i thought i would mention it.

i had vista on it, like 7-8 gigs of music, C&C 3, a couple other games, and some non vital spread sheets.

Oh apparently you cannot change forum thread titles.. sorry about that.

That's weird, do you have another hard drive lying around that you can plug in and see if that error goes away?

no unfortunatly i dont. but i just decided to install ubuntu over it all and it seems to be working so far... then ill run disc checks and if all is well, reinstall vista. another theory me and a friend came up with is that there was a bad boot sector or something like that so a format would fix it.

the downside, the loss of all my industral, electronic and trance music......:( :(   :( :(

heh. Should've backed that up. You should've been able to read the drive from ubuntu.

i tried to read the drive but it gave me an error and said that it was not accessable.

I would still go to your hard drive manufactures website and download their diagnostic tools and make sure the drive is in fact okay... just to be sure.

well i cant find one for ubuntu. if anyone can recomend one i would be greatful. its a western digital caviar 160gb.
