I've got a big problem guys. If you could help me, I'd really appriciate it.

This morning when I got home from work, WinXP was downloading a small update. Since my computer had been on for a few days straight, I decided to reboot.

When I got everything back up and running, low and behold, HUGE problems.

Firefox won't work, Thunderbird won't work, Opera won't work, Trillian won't work, and worst of all, F@H WON'T WORK! It folds fine, but it can't connect to the servers. Which is the same problem with the other Open Source communications apps. Strangly, almost conspiratorily, Internet Explorer works.

If you guys have any ideas, I'd love to hear them. I've never seen anything like this before. It really smacks of 800lb Gorilla marketing. I really should install Kubuntu...
 
did you turn system restore off? if not just roll back a few days

 
I'd start by examining all active firewalls... sorta depends on what firewall you usually run, but I suspect windows firewall as the culprit.

I would take IE to windows update and see what just installed. May have downloaded a patch of some sort that dosen't like those apps.
 
after reading post yeah it prob is a firewall. type setting thing.

 
Yeah, it was a firewall. I had downloaded the free version of Zone Alarm a few days ago and forgotten about it. It's installation wasn't completed untill I rebooted and that is what caused the problem. I had tried to turn it off, but apparently one or more of it's processes were running in the background. Everything is working now though.

Thanks for the help. I've got to remember what I download more often, this threw me for a loop at first.
 
you should always reboot with you download and install something to keep this from happening
