Hey guys, I've been having problems with BF2142 and video performance. For some reason, my framerates have been pretty low and so I decided to upgrade my x1800xt to an x1950xtx. Things are definitely better outside running around at 1280, 2xAA. But once I get into a Titan, framerates drop to like 20 -30 fps. I KNOW that shouldn't happen b/c my roommate is running an x1900gt w/ an core 2 e6400 and at high resolutions all dual core cpus pretty much perform the same.

Now, I know that official Cat 6.10 drivers haven't come out. I've tried the cd drivers, the "modified" cat 6.9 drivers and the beta 6.10 (folding @ home) drivers and things haven't improved. I didn't do a clean install when I installed this card. Should I do that?

My 3dMark06 score with the x1950xtx has been around 6200 pts when my x2 4600+ and the gpu are at stock. It's definitely an improvement over the 4700pts for the x1800xt. But in game, I'm not seeing complete domination by the x1950xtx. Outside, framerates are around 40 - 65fps.

Any suggestions? I'm willing to do a clean win xp install if need be. Right now I have the MS hotfix installed, amd dual core patch, and the latest dual core driver for the cpu.

If there is any other info you guys need, lemme know.

but, I could really use some help here. Thanks all.

Well something is defintely wrong, but not all dual cores cpu perform the same, Intel's new core 2 > any athlon cpu out right now.

But anyways, it shouldnt drop that low.

Does it only happen in bf2 2142, what about another online game; css, wow ? Are you hosting a server and playing or just playing online??

The Titan is your problem. That thing lags the shit out of the game, bunch of bugs and such. The fact you're getting the FPS you are is damn good.

Yeah I know the Titan lags like crazy. I just play online. My roomy's e6400 never lags that bad in the Titan, so you that's the problem? The game is more cpu dependent than gpu? Well, I just reformatted and installed the Cat 6.10 beta driver. Performance was the same if not worse. *sigh* this really is kind of frustrating. Maybe when the official drivers come out, things will improve a little. Meanwhile, I guess I just have to turn off AA. If I lower the res to 1024, things should improve right?

Meanwhile, I haven't tried any other games yet. I just got the video card the day before yesterday. Maybe I'll install F.E.A.R. multiplayer and see how that works.

Otherwise, I tested the system with two sticks of Corsair RAM in case it was maybe a ram problem and my 3dmark score was about the same (6145, everything stock) as with my mushkin ddr500. Comparing cpu scores on futuremark, my cpu score seems to be in line. Bf 2142 isn't a multithreaded game right? So maybe I should change the affinity to one cpu. Also, haven't installed the dual core optimizer yet. I'll try that too..

Thanks for the input so far. Keep it coming...It's been hard to find what other people have been experiencing performance-wise in bf2142.

very strange....try stripping your system down to its bare components, yank the sound card out and any other pci/usb devices to try and isolate the problem. I used to game with an audigy 4 and every once in while a game would just stutter non stop. Try a timedemo in fear and see what framrates you get, also check the catalyst control center setting and switch them to performance. My x1950 xtx has a bunch of ati-aliasing properties when enabled severly reduce my frame rates....give that a try hope it helps:p

Alright, I'll give it a shot. Out of curiousity, I jacked up the AA to 4x + Adaptive, AF 16x + HQ, and gamed a bit last night on 2142. I guess the power of the card shows itself in that framerates were just as good as before. Today I tried the game on my Samsung 17in CRT at 1600 x 1200 and 2048 x 1536 and even at those resolutions w/ AA and only 4x AF, the game is very playable (40 - 70 fps outside).

I've been replacing parts since I built this machine. it's my first build that has been painful. New PSU, new MOBO, new Video card, ...all after buying all that stuff in August. I'll disconnect the 3 other harddrives (2 ide, 1 usb), tv tuner, and the x-fi and see how it runs too. Good suggestion. Thanks.

In the end, it might just be that a 2.66ghz X2 + 2Gb of 533DDR just can't handle it? Sounds unlikely. But if a Core 2 can handle the Titan portions of the game and I can't, it doesn't leave much in terms of reasons. ah well.

yhea, worth a shot...I cranked up all the options in catayst and i went from 335fps in css to 160, still very playable i agree. Good luck, it just may be time to upgrade to core 2 like the rest of us ;)

Yeah you can blame my impatience for the lack of a Core 2. I literally bought the x2 a week and a half before the Core 2s came out. Of course, most people had to wait a few more weeks before they could actually find places w/ Core 2s in stock. Eh..oh well. Theoretically, next semester I could get one, but buying new RAM just seems like an expensive proposition. We'll see. I tend to be impulsive about these things :)
