I have Wine installed (and I even opened Notepad!) but I am not finding anything that explains how to "install" Windows applications, or make them usable. My goal is to have Outlook available....games would be a plus too...but I'll worry about them later.

How do I take a Windows application, and get it installed and available to run? Is there something better I should use, such as Cedaga?
 
some applications require more windows base libraries (or whatever the windows people call them) in order to install/run in wine. but if you want to give stuff a try, just execute the .exe (./foo.exe or double-click foo.exe) in order to launch the installer and see what happens.

i don't know if outlook will run/install or not, as i haven't tried that, but it seems unlikely. honestly, it seems silly to me, since there are outlook-like programs in linux. generally, one runs things that aren't available in linux in wine (or other emulator). :confused: i also don't game, but i think some games work okayish in wine but reading i have done seems to indicate that the non-free wine (whatever it's called) and cedega work better than wine for games.


the way i look at it is, what's the point of running all those windows apps in linux? why not just run windows?
 
Oh okay...I think I get it. When WINE asks for the .exe file, I point it to the setup file? I was thinking it was asking for the program's .exe file.

Thats correct, treat WINE like a virtual windows,

Also any particular reason for trying to get Outlook working, Thunderbird is pretty good, or is there something you are missing.

For office apps (and better game support) have a look into CrossOffice, they have tweaked WINE alot and have good performance

As to games I would say look into Cedega but that are twats
 
I've been told by several people that Evolution and Exchange 2003 don't play nice...and this is for a corporate machine.
