Hey guys, and or, girls..... I need help installing Windows XP Professional on one of my computers...... My brother gave me an XP disk that is supposed to be a company CD that he bought, and can be used to install up to like 10 computers or something like that.......

Anyways, I have Windows XP Professional on my current computer.... and my brother has told me that I need to install Windows XP Professional on the other Hard Drive using the PC that I am now... has to do with something about the BIOS Chip startup and stuff like that.....

Well, I've checked the CD he gave me... and as far as I can see.... It has all the files that it needs, but for one, they are all in a .zip archive (which, if I'm trying to install onto a new Hard Drive, I'm not sure how it would read those), and second, it doesn't boot up to the CD.... Now i've gotten it to boot up to another XP CD he gave me.... but he told me that that CD didn't have all the files, nor the correct ones and that I should use the other one......

Problem is.... It just doesn't want to boot up to any of the CD's now, I have Windows XP Setup, and Windows 2000 Setup on the Hard Drive, and when I start it up.... It only wants to go to Windows XP Startup (which my bro told me I needed to delete).......... Now, I want to delete both of the operating systems on it.... so I can try to boot to it again properly.... however, I do now know how to do this......

If anyone can help me with this subject, it would be greatly appriciated.....

There are two problems with this.

#1. Your brother is a clown when it comes to computers.
#2. That version of Windows is pirated, and we can't help you with that. It's against the rules.

QFT!!!! :D

Are you sure that it is a pirated thing? He said he had to pay a couple extra thousand dollars..... and don't take the quotes directly from me... I don't know EXACTLY what he said. He just gave a boot disk.... problem is, it's on DVD, not CD, and I'm not sure that I can use my DVD Drive to boot..... I don't know, if you ppl can't help me, then that's ok.......

It sounds like the CD is pirated in the fact that it was bought for a business and it appears your brother made a copy for you to use. Your message is a little confusing. If you have windows XP pro already installed, why do you have to do it again. It also appears that you either have a dual booting system, or you did a poor instal of XP pro over windows 2000. It doesnt sound like your copy of windows is legal for you to use. With that we cant help you with this problem.

Well, let's go over a few things here.

Even if he did buy it for his company, you don't work at his company. EULA violation = piracy

Huh? Either you're talking about the .cab files or the CD was downloaded in broken up .rar files that weren't reassembled and decompressed. Possibly pirated

Obviously this is a pirated CD. I've never found a legit OS CD that was missing files or incorrect files. 100% pirated

There has never been a DVD version of any MS operating system other than the All Windows DVD which is a collection of all their OS's - pirated.

He lied to you. And I'll say what I was going to say in my first post before I toned it down. Your brother is a dumbass. And it's sad he'd lie to you about such a thing.

You can get an OEM copy of XP Home for $85-90 depending on what sales are happening. Search newegg.com for XP Home oem and you'll find a link to buy it for $89. Once you have that running on your computer, keep your brother far, far away from it.

Acutally, There is *one* OS that MS does distribute as a DVD, which is SBS 2003. :p

However I still agree with the fact the OS disks the OP is trying to use are pirated. ;)

You should make your brother eat that CD, and tell him to plese stay out of the IT business. As mentioned, he's a clown, and I wouldn't listen to a single damn thing he says about computers ever again.

You bastard, I was on such a nice roll there. :p

But now I know, and knowing is half the battle. :D

Well, whatever.... He owns his own buisness... but thanks for asking (NOT)....... And none of you have the right to call him a bastard, or stupid......

Everything I have talked about (including what he said) is all ME.... he didn't say a damn word about this stuff......You all can call me a dump bastard, but not my bro (he's smart). He just won't talk to me because he's busy getting married and stuff..... however, if you all think i'm dumb..... well then, in my opinion, for only being 14, I'm pretty damn smart with computers..... and I'm sure that most of you are adults yourself.......

Now me being a christian and all... I don't approve of the whole Cussing is Allowed rule......But that's nothing I can do........ Now since none of you want to even try considering for a second that there may be some way of this being legal......I WOULD LIKE THIS FORUM TO BE CLOSED AND ERASED by any administrators that seem to be there.......

Maybe I am just a dumbass 14 year-old........ but not as dumb as you guys to think logically.....

Note: If for any reason an administrator may wish to permanetly ban me.... GO AHEAD, cause this site is not my life; and so far, I have gotten NO help from it!

Goodbye

Wow...holy lack of maturity, Batman. No one had a comment towards you, and if you reread through, you'd see that. Secondly, what your brother told you is flat out wrong. Just because he owns his own business and is getting married soon, doesn't mean he suddenly knows all about computers.

You happened to post a operating system question in a forum, which is read by quite a few IT professionals (people who work with these topics as a profession). Regardless of what you think of your brother, what he told you is wrong.

Now, if you are christian enough to be against cussing, than you should be against stealing as well. The version of windows that your brother gave you is only legal to use for a large company that purchased a site license, and since you are not employed at the company, nor is the computer you are installing it on owned by the company, you are breaking the law.

Sorry bud, no offence meant. But the fact that your brother would tell you he paid thousands of dollars for this software, when it's undeniably pirated, makes him a liar and a jerk in this instance. If he would have been upfront with you, or gave you a legit CD, you wouldn't have a problem with your PC.

I hope he runs his business with better ethics than this.

Oh, and BTW, I jokingly called SJConsultant a bastard because he pointed out a mistake I made. Hence why I quoted him and used the :p smiley.

Well in that case:

<stern lecturing voice>

Stop pirating software boy, or you'll go blind.

Lighten up man. ;)

Well If your brother didn't say anything then the following statements are false:

So which is it? Did your brother in fact tell you these things or are you making up a story to obtain help with a pirated copy of Windows?

Just so you know, either the initial statements are a lie or your lieing now. Either way you've incriminated yourself beyond a doubt what you are up to is no good.

Geez, with an attitude like this, I hope you have plenty of flame suits available. You'll find that as long as you read through the rules, don't act like a 'tard, and are open to a little friendly ribbing every now and then you'll make a lot of friends on the [H].

You're OP was kind of fragmented, and it looked to me like you were just telling us what your bro told you. If thats not the case, then fine. Either way, you're still messing with non-original (read - pirated) software, and that simply isn't tolerated up here. Best bet is to go out and buy yourself an original WinXP set and get busy. You'll find that it works *exactly* as its suppose to, without all the hassle and problems.

Just my two cents of course....

Apparently no administrators are reading this.... but oh well...... I'll take all of your advice.... I'm going to go buy an original copy of XP tommorrow..... but the problem is still that my computer does not want to boot up from a CD. I've tried to change the BIOS settings.... but it just skips over it.....I'll update you all when I get my original Copy tommorrow......

However, I did lie.... My bro didn't tell me anything.... he's always too busy.... Sorry for losing my cool, but when ppl insult my family (and cuss about them) it kinda sets me off..... He is smart about computers... he could do all this in like 5 min. but like I said, he's too busy. He has his own personal business in computer making. But like the rules... I will get too chatty....

Well in that case:

I think I will, however, know that I didn't officially pirate it myself... others did....

Once again the problem is that I am only 14, and being that age, no one takes me seriously thinking that I don't know anything about computers.

Wow...holy lack of maturity, Batman. No one had a comment towards you, and if you reread through, you'd see that.

Once again, I never said anybody said anything about me... they talked about my bro... and like I said.... my bro didn't say any of that stuff... I made it up......

Now (and plz read this) I think that everybody who is going to post on here.... needs to read the forum before posting; read the ENTIRE forum... because you guys are missing some things....

Now... if anybody would like to post in advance how to use my disk drive to boot, that would be great! Like I said, I'll buy the software tommorrow (that way if my system crashes, I don't have to worry about having the disk anymore). It is a little pricey, but not at all much for what it gives.

Now if you all could have patience with me, and stop cussing in this forum, it would be greatly appriciated.

Note to admin.: I no longer need you to close this post, as long as others will help me with the original XP installation, then I will still be needing it.....

Thank you all for your help

Now I just hope this post can calm down and we could all just be patient with each other :D thanks!

I'm thinking that you'll probably have better success with the official copy of WinXP - its bootable as long as you've got those BIOS settings changed to boot with the CDROM first - or at least before the HD. (which you indicated that you had checked that)

Just out of curiousity, did you attempt to boot your system with a known good "bootable" CD? Most likely the CD that you were attempting to boot wasn't set up to boot with. One surefire way to check and make sure its not your equipment is to boot with a Ubuntu LiveCD or something like that.

Well, we don't like being lied to as much as you don't like people saying bad things about your brother.

kevinarbogast said:
.... my bro didn't say any of that stuff... I made it up......

The funny thing is that you made stuff up about your brother, making him look like a jerk, but then you get mad at us for pointing that out. It's a little hypocritical don't you think?

Anyway serve it as a lesson learned. If you want help here just be honest next time. No point in lying on a forum.

You also can't go through life blaming everything on your age. We have many members on here around your age. Quite a few of them really contribute. The reason why no one took you seriously is your attitude and immaturity, not your age. Please note that age doesn't determine maturity...they are two different things.

The reason why you couldn't boot before was that the pirated CD isn't bootable. If you get a legitimate CD, it should work fine for you.

as long as your cd has boot priority in your bios, a genuine copy will have the correct boot files to allow it boot when you press "any key" for some reason if it doesnt boot you can look to see if the jumper on the back of your cd-rom is set to either C.S (cable select) or MASTER (the end farthest away from the mobo on your cable). if your cd-rom is on the second connector (closer to the mobo) than you would need to have it at C.S. or SLAVE.

if you have 1 drive set to C.S. than both will need to be set that way.

it will than say "setup is inspecting your computer" and bring you to the blue screen where it loads nessacery files (also where you load scsi or raid drivers) than its just a simple format and partion and away you go. i strongly suggest al least making a small partion on the drive, keep important stuff on that small partion if you dont have a second drive. if you kill windows and need to reformat that important stuff will still be available (i keep all my drivers and installers there so i can reformat and not have to dl anything).

after that its pretty easy, just follow the directions on the screen.

Some of my MSDN CD's are like that - they will have media for multple versions on one CD, but don't boot. I use http://www.nliteos.com/ to build a bootable *pre-patched* ISO. Copy the file to your HDD, copy over the SP and patches, and let it do its magic.

If there are any more people reading this, I would like to state that ALL rudeness mentioned earlier in this forum should be ignored.

I would like to apologize for my earlier attitide. This year was my freshman year in high-shcool, and at the time I was dealing with a virus and was too stressed out.

I have the problem solved, and I would like to thank everyone who posted for their help.

Thank you all

well d00d, this message board is serious, i mean i've had people oppose me just for talking using 1337 language. especially for the word "teh" but it's cool, I like them here coz hey're all helpful if you ask in teh corret teh manner.

this thread is quiete funny actually but hey, no need to take it seriously man. go out and have some fun ;)

kevinarbogast, there's no need to bump a thread this old just to apologize and thank people. You actually sound quite mature for your age, unlike MaXimus, whose 1337 speak and off-topic posting are on the verge of earning him a nice long vacation from his posting privileges. ;)
