Help with Win 7 freezing!

Hi Guys,

I am having frequent and constant problems with Windows. Here's my spec:

- Intel Core i7-4770K
- Asus Z87-A mobo
- 16GB of Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600MHz RAM
- Nvidia GeForce GTS 450 (with newest drivers installed)
- Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (bang up-to-date with patches and fixes)

Windows is crashing on me (more precisely: freezing) every couple of hours or more. Even when the system has been idling overnight, it soon crashes again when I start doing stuff.

Most often, the screen just freezes and no programs are responsive. Usually, just after this occurence, the mouse also freezes and doesn't respond to commands. Ctrl + Alt + Del doesn't work and I have to press the computer Reset button and reload the OS.

I've had a couple of BSODs too, but the freezes are what is happening frequently. It's really ruining my computer experience!

Sometimes, I am also getting (or without immediate freezes) the cursor doing strange things, like showing the wrong pointer for the action required (e.g. showing an arrow pointer instead of a hand icon). I suspect this behaviour and the freezes are linked in some way.

This system is new and only about 10 days' old! I have hardly any progs on the system except MS Office and Rome 2: Total War. I have removed the ASUS AI Suite incase that was causing the problems.

I have tested the RAM overnight with MemTest86+ and it came out OK.

I had these freezes also sometimes with my old Core2Duo system and that was one reason (apart from bad RAM) that I decided on this new system. But the problem is still there and worse now!

I am using a decent aftermarket HSF and nothing is overclocked.

Does anyone have any ideas of how I can fix this problem?

Thanks for your thoughts :)

Cheers, Ed

Any parts being being reused in your new system?
What kind of hard drive and power supply are you using?

Try taking the video card out and leave one stick of ram. Re-install parts one at a time.

Look to see if your mobo has any updates for the BIOS. I would update this if all else fails. This might introduce more issues.

Those BSOD should produce a entry in your logs, look for any logs around the time of the BSOD.

Thanks, Butch, for your reply to my distress call.

I have taken the video card out and am now running the system on the on-chip video.

It works fine! No freezing or graphical anomalies.

So I guess we found the culprit. I will need to buy a new video card then (I hope I can't expect this problem to recur then?).

Do you know if it is a common problem for a video card to do this?

Thanks!

I've seen all sorts of issues come about from video cards. It's not common, but I wouldn't say it's rare either.

Well, I removed the video card and uninstalled all its drivers. No more freezes :)

But now I am getting regular BSODs.

Can anyone tell me where to go to find the BSOD logs?

Thanks!

Hi, Wolfdale75,

Check the Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Also, if you have any O/C, turn them off and put everything back to stock clocks. Get a temp monitoring program and start looking at temps for your CPU as well.

Hi Guys, I have downloaded a program called BlueScreenView.

It says I keep getting a crash of ntoskrnl.exe in ntoskrnl.exe+75b80 - I am getting these crashes even in Safe Mode with Networking.

Does anyone know what this means?

I can't see anything about event ID.

I am not overclocking anything...

My HDD is a Samsung SSD 128 GB. It's new and the Windows install is only about 13 days' old.

Can anyone help, i am getting desparate...

Update: I looked in Event Viewer.

The Error code I keep getting today is 7001

Critical Errors I am getting is 41 Kernel-Power

This is driving me nuts...

Sorry, my SSD is a SanDisk Extreme, not a Samsung (incase that makes any difference)...

Try this
1. Make sure the nvidia video drivers are completely uninstalled
if that doesnt work
2. Reload BIOS defaults
if that doesnt work
3. update motherboard BIOS
wait to see if that works. If it doesn't
4. Update SSD firmware

Update: new system now running rock solid. No BSODs or freezes for hours.

My father simply disconnected one of the DVD drives and reconnected it again and bang, all the troubles went away... I couldn't be happier :)

Thanks for all your advice and suggestions! I appreciate it a lot :)

As long as your Windows 7 freezes are concerned, there are many background services causing higher memory usage. There is need to optimize background services and items with the help of a System Optimizer software. If that doesn't help, don't worry. You have many other options like disk defragmentation, uninstalling unneeded programs, etc.

Defrag your hard disk:

1. Click Start, type "Disk Defragmenter" in the Search Box.
2. Press ENTER.
3. Select all disk drives, click "Defragment Disk" button.

Uninstall Unneeded Programs

1. Click Start | Control Panel.
2. Click Programs | Uninstall a Program.
3. Select a program that you don't use.
4. Click the Uninstall/ Remove button.
