help with video editing

I'm making a short, 15-20 minute video presentation for a class project. The video needs some basic editing such as transitions, intros, etc. For recording, I'm using a mini dvd camcorder which I plan to connect to my computer via usb/firewire. What software can I use to accomplish my needs?

I am using Windows XP and need to make the final product into a dvd. Thanks!
 
Can you use Windows Movie Maker? I mean, how much control do you need? It seems like you only need basic stuff, so why pay more for it.
