i bought a vantec ezswap for use in a dell sbs2003 server.

here is the product: MRK-200ST-BK
install manual (i couldnt understand it): http://www.vantecusa.com/info/mrk200st-install.pdf

i plugged everything in except the motherboard connector (dell mobo doesn't have anywhere for it), and when i booted up it blew up on me. i think the backlit display went out or something because i heard a sort of spark pop and then smelled smoke.

did i do something wrong, or did i just get a bad ezswap?

luckily, the machine was unaffected although oddly enough it seemed to destroy my ethernet cord (?? had to replace it). i have yet to see whether the hdd survived. I am a bit nervous to try it on the server again, as i would be in deep shit if it crashed.

So basically, i am wondering:
1. did i install it correctly
2. are there any other hotswap bays that are of quality and will work with a dell server? needs to be SATA.

thx

Is there a molex connector as well as sata power on that enclosure? What cables did you plug into it? Is the machine otherwise stable?

yeah the machine is stable. there is only the molex, no sata power. i only plugged the molex and sata cable.

anyone have experience w/ the Promise SuperSwap 1600? everything on newegg looks of really crap quality..
