Okay this is my question, I currently have a system with these specs

AMD XP 3200
1024MB Ram
Geforce 6800GT
120GB HardDrive
DVD/CD Burner
350Watt generic case
Some soket A motherboard

And I was thinking of upgrading but would it be really worth it to sell this system and upgrade, I would want a 7800GTX and some more powerfull hardware so I wouldn't be behind, but how would you upgrade with approxamatly 2000$ to spend and my current hardware?
 
Sell it all AFTER you put in a decent PSU, that thing is a time bomb, it'll fuck up your entire system. Generic PSU's generally suck ass.

Buy all new stuff after that. AMD64/1gigram/pcie 7800gtx/soundblaster/lianli case/Antec 500-600w psu

You'd be set.

But can you answer this question about a new computer.

My friend told me that new motherboards can adjust the voltage for the ram so you don't have to be all woried about the specs of the ram?

Also would want a Duelcore system, whats the real performance difference of say the AMD X2 4200 and 4400?

Is it really worth it to by a SLI motherboard and a second Geforce 7800GTX now for that matter?

Also I would want fans, do you thing like a 550 Watt powersupply and like 5 fans would prevent overheating?
 
It wouldn't be worth it to keep that system, no, selling it would be the most viable option IMHO. This is only with the added assumption that you are already unhappy with the performance of your system and want a good 30% more performance all around and that you are willing to sell it and buy something else to get it. Otherwise, just dont bother, OC and wait 6 months.

I'm not sure the difference in performance and you'd want to consult the AMD forum experts on that one, I am far behind on my AMD64/dual core knowledge because I don't plan on upgrading any time soon myself.

With an Antec 550w power supply you could get alot of fans on that bad boy, probably as many as any case would handle. You'd also want to make sure your new power supply has dual +12v rails for better power regulation and a better ability to run more stuff, like fans,cdroms,hds,7800gtx's, etc.

You do have to be worried about the specs of the ram, you wouldn't expect to run pc2100 at pc3500 speeds simply because newer power supplies enable you to up the voltage by .2 volts..

It would be worth it to buy an SLI or ATI SLI motherboard when upgrading because it wouldn't cost much more than a high end board if anything and you'd have alot more upgradability even if you don't want SLI when you get the system originally. That way you can, in 6 months, buy another graphics card and immediately bump your 3dmark05 score by 3-5k (for instance).

I don't suggest a 7800GTX SLI system at the current prices because you couldn't afford it and a dual core processor at only $2k price range. 2x$600 for 7800gtx's + $1k for the processor = $2.2k and you haven't even bought a motherboard or ram or psu yet.

If you are going dual core and a big case with 10 fans, 2 cdroms, over 2 hds and possibly SLI in the future I'd go with a 650W with 2 12v rails in order to ensure stability. PC&P (I think, consult the psu forum for the best brand) makes the best psu's out there by general consensus but like I said double check that because I'm only human ;).

Ah thanks for your help, I guess Im just a price/performance person and can't see the point of justifing spending over 1000$ (Assuming I get 600-800$ off my current system), just to build it around a new GPU, I mean I really have no huge reasons to upgrade yet as I woudn't gain much "Real world" performance and prices will be droped probably around november or so then I'll see what I can get for around 1500$ or so.

And whats wrong with me, I can justify spending 600$ on a Geforce 7800GTX but not 500$ on a AMD64 4000+?

yah.... you dont really need it.. I guess...u just feel like ur behind with that 6800gt and axp barton....but still...if u dont need it, why bother? hehe

Yea kindof I feel like I'm missing out on good hardware but at the other time I still have a decent Mid-High Ranged system that does everything I "need" it to do, of course faster speeds are always nice, but then if I upgrade now will I be frothing at the mouth to upgrade later this year? I hope not and thats one reason I guess to wait.
