Hello Everyone, I come to you for advice on a upgrade for my brother. This is extremely price sensitive.

He is currently running a E7400, 4gigs Ram, and a 9800GTS.

Working through some upgrades for him with my spare parts and trying to decide on a video card. I have a 5870 that needs a cooling fan replacement, is there anything we could buy for $100-$120 that would out perform it? Or should we just fix the cooling on it and slap it in there.

The rest of the upgrade is also up for discussion. I have a socket 1155 mobo laying here that we are going to use. Thinking of an i3-2100 (this can be had for about $90), how would that compare to a E7400 in BF3? The next step up would be the i5-3470 ivy bridge.

I understand bang for buck, but in this case every dollar counts.

We have all had it happen to were we are asked for upgrade advice and realize that the system is so old that anything they buy from the shelf currently will be a noticiably significant upgrade, even the budget stuff.

Thoughts on anything?

Games the computer currently plays:

Diablo 3 (he has severe crashing issues for some reason)
SCII

He wants to be able to play BF3 with me so I am trying to get the upgrade setup so he can run it decently on medium settings (1080P res). I played on 1920x1200 with a i5-750 and that 5870 at medium-high settings and hit about 50-60FPS on metro, but it would drop to 30 or so on Caspian border (had to run medium if I wanted to play 64 player caspian)... which is now why I rock a i5-3570K and 670. :D

if it's extremely price sensitive upgrade, Fix the cooling problem with the hd 5870.
and get an i3 2100 you'll get similar gaming performance to the i5 but you'll notice your cpu usage hits the 90%.

There is literally no card that can outperform a HD 5870 and which sells for USD 100 - 120. The minimum card that beats a HD 5870 is HD 7850. And that costs more than USD 200. fix the HD 5870 cooling fan.

Grab you a Zalman VF3000A Heatpipe VGA Cooler for around $45
this will fit a 5870 and will cool probably better than the stock cooler
