I have an amd xp 3000+. Originally at 2.167ghz, I tried overclocking it to 2.4ghz using a Coolermaster Jet 7 heatsink. I believe i set the vcore at about 1.8v. I tried running Prime95 torture test and it finally didn't restart my computer after the first 10 or 15 seconds. My idle temp is about 45C, sometimes 40C if the room is cold and it sits for a while. I was monitoring the temp the whole time and the temp was rising 0.5C about every 10 seconds or so. It wasn't long before the temp was up to 58C. I didn't want to to get to high so I stopped Prime95. Is this temp too high of a temp when trying to burn in an overclock? Does that high temp mean that I don't have a good enough HSF to overclock? Do I need watercooling or just a really good HSF. I want to go amd 64 soon, prolly a 3800+, and I want to overclock it also. I was told that I would be able to overclock fine with just a good HSF. Is this true or do I need watercooling. I'm looking to get either a Asetek Vapochill Micro or the Zalman CNPS9500-led. I will probably get water cooling eventually only if I need it to overclock.
 
Try things at 1.775V at the core. This should knock a few degrees off of your load temps, and if you're under 55C at full load your chip should be pretty comfortable.
 
I tried 1.775v at the vcore. I overclock my xp 3000+ from 2.167 to 2.4 ghz. I ran Prime95 torture test and it seemed to max out at 58C from a idle temp of low to mid 40's. It was in the 4th test after 15 minutes with 0 errors and 0 warnings. What do you think? I'm using a coolermaster Jet 7 heatsink. Are those temps too high or would I need a better heatsink to overclock at this speed or higher? Any suggestions or input would be great.
