Okay so I am building a new system after two years of having the same system with one video card upgrade so this is gonna be a full system build.
I have some time until the build as tax returns will be paying for a chunk. So I am expecting to assemble in the next 2 months at the latest.

I have decided upon the e6750 core2 2.66

I am getting an 8800GT (with the intention of getting 2 hooking them up SLI)

my questions is this I have seen a TON of bad comments about the 608i SLI chipset including the ultra versions and am wondering if it really is worth the price premium to get 780i based board If so which board in the next two months should I keep an eye out for? If not which board should I get I have been looking at the strikee and the MSI 680i platinum.

My absolute limit for mobo price is 310USD not counting shipping or tax.

Ive read some of the back posts and it seems everyone says to stay away from 680i but at the same time I see lots of reviews and comments on how good it overclocks and am just very confused. especially since 780i only seems to add quad core and tri-Sli support and since 8800gt wont support tri-sli I don't really need either.

680i had a lot of problems initially, and most of them have been resolved already with the eVGA NF68-A1/T1 revision boards. The only problem that remains is OC'ing a quadcore CPU, which the 780i supposedly fixes. 780i offers Tri-SLI as you mentioned, but it also adds support for the new Yorkfield 45nm quadcore CPUs that are coming out soon (they'll be out before taxes are due).

First of all, what size monitor do you have and why do you want SLI?

Why go for the E6750 when the E8400 is now out and can OC much higher than it?

If you don't need SLI, stick to a P35 board instead. Its a much more stable chipset and can OC better since it runs cooler than its nForce counterparts.
 
A note about the P35 chipset:

Everyone says it is more stable. I assume they mean "reliable", because I have never had any stability issues with my 680i, and those who have had problems have had failures, not so much stability problems.

It's not a big deal, and I'm not advocating going with a 680i at this point (if you want SLI and have the cash the 780i is clearly the only way to go right now) but when it isn't randomly catching on fire it's actually a very nice board... and I've yet to have to RMA mine. Knock on wood.

as for why I want SLI I'm expecting to pick up a second video card and a 22inch LCD in about 6 more months.
my understanding is that SLI will improve the frame rates at resolutions of 1600X or so which is what I plan on playing in.

You don't need SLI if you aren't running a 24" or larger -- 1920x1200 or better. At 1600x1200 or 1680x1050 (20-22" LCD) a single high end card will be fine. An 8800 GTS 512MB (or 8800 GTX / Ultra) would be ideal, but a single 8800 GT 512MB should be fine.
