help with Sapphire HD4870 flash

there is a problem with numerous sapphire hd4870's where the game would freeze with little squares and stuff. and searching around for a loonnng time, i found that you need to flash the video card bios. but i have no experience at this whatsoever. i dont know how to back up my current bios and ect. i also read on an article that its safer to flash it in DOS because flashing in windows is unsafe, but that was written like 5 years ago and maybe things have changed?

Sapphire also supplied a "how to" on flashing the bios, but it didnt really help me that much. im so close to fixing this problem, and this is the last step i really need help on. thanks!
 
I would go with the dos method, it has been proven to be more safe. What seems to be the issue that you are confused about? Getting to dos? To do that you put a floppy into your floppy drive(if you have one) download a windows 98se floppy image.

double click the exe and let it format the disk for dos. After that make sure you have the bios on your c: directory. After all that the steps provided by sapphire should explain the rest.

Damn it, I just ordered the 1GB Toxic 4870. Now I'm in panic mode. I wonder which cards are affected.

it is only a problem with sapphire cards, but not all. i guess i was just an unlucky one? and im not sure if its a problem for toxic 1gb versions. i have only heard about it with 512mb versions heres a video of the problem if you guys want to check it out.

@sc3253, so if i do not have a floppy drive, i assume a usb stick would work too?
also, i just run the windows98se floppy image after i transferred it to the usb stick?

yes, im also confused on how to get into dos mode. do i save the folder with the bios in the c:? after that, then what?
 
i have the Sapphire HD4870 , 1GB version for over 3 weeks now. i didn't face any such problem. so far i have tried, need for speed undercover, cod4, red alert3 and tiberian wars with it and can play at 1600x1200 resolution with everything turned on with good fps. the fan on this card is very silent, but sometimes during game play it spins up for 2-3 seconds when its audible. mine is ideling around 48-50c and highest i seen was 68c durng heavy gameplay. i can oc mine at 800hz core and 1000hz memory at the toxic level with ATI's CCC, when oc haven't notice any unusual heat problem or display corruption or gameplay boost.so gone back to stock 750@ core and 900@ memory.

sc3253, where do i get the flash utility? when i downloaded the bios from the sapphire website, it gave me a folder labeled 'flash' with various files inside. is one of them the flash tool? when i downloaded the guide, it says to download the bios and flash tool in this zipped folder and then run in DOS.

would that mean that i put the entire folder in along with the DOS image? sorry this is all confusing and i dont want to mess it up.

i found this mini-guide that another person posted on a different site.


1. Boot in pure Dos mode. That means you need a bootable floppy or USB Stick
2. On an USB Stick, copy the content of the 578.zip archive which you have downloaded
3. After booting from floppy or USB stick do this:
Assuming your drive letter for stick is X, type:

CD X:
cd \flash
flash

After all this, your current bios will be saved on the stick and the new one will be written.
