Greetings,
I need to know if anyone here has any experience with the samsung HLN4365W or HLN437W DLP monitors. I can get the latter for about 1800 bucks and It is looking like a good deal, 43 inches, 16:9, dvi and multi components. I need to know if this will make a good HTPC monitor with things like resolution, colors blurring etc. The reviews as an HDTV seem to be great, it's not heavy..it's crisp and bright. I need to know however if i will get the cropping issues and overscan if i use the DVI. Anyway...any help would be great!!! Thanks,

M

It is my understanding that you will have overscan with any HDTV. You can correct it by using an odd resolution, but then you loose the 1:1 pixel ratio taht give the best picture. as far as that particular model, only thing I know aobut it is that it looks very nice in the store.

i have the HLP5065W. my dad currently has the HLP4665W which he got after returning the HLN437W you are looking at. he had a few problems with it and it basically went dead on the last day of his 30-day return window with best buy. so he went back and they just then had the newer HLP models in. so he got the new model. there are still some issues, but i think it's a much better choice. of course it probably isn't $1800 either ;)

in any case they are all nice TVs. if price is an issue that is a great set, but if not i might wait until the new 1080i sets come out in the spring. even if you opt for one of the current models at that time you'll get them for a good bit cheaper.

as for overscan- you get overscan regardless. on my TV there is a screen mode called expand thatr makes the PC desktop fit the screen nearly perfectly when i have the PC resolution set to 1280 x 720 (native tv resolution). i'm not sure if the older model has this mode or not, and you may not be able to tell by playing with it in the store- different modes are available depending on the type of connection for the source you are using.

The expand for 1:1 pixel mapping is new with the HLPs. I have a HLP4663 for our bedroom and it works great as a monitor. There were some decent upgrades from the HLN to HLP series but the HLN is still a great monitor. There is alot of information out there for custom resolutions and configurations with a htpc for that set.
