I have come into possession of a Compaq ML350 G2 server. It has a 120mm fan on the back that starts out sounding like a turbojet, then drops slightly in noise to around a prop job. I can't stand it, but everything i've tried so far has resulted in failures that shut the server down within 5 seconds (there is a countdown). Thermal shutdown is an on/off option in the bios, however disabling makes no difference.
There are 4 pins on the system board specifically for this 1 fan. It has 3 wires coming from it, and the black wire gets split into two. It goes something like this:
X X X _ X where _ is a blank space.
Wire color is Black, Black, Red, (blank), Blue.
Through use of other fans, just to be sure, Black and red are - and +.
However, when i try to use a quieter fan, and hook tach up to the blue pin, the system still says "system fan failure, shutting down in..." .
Anybody have some experience to lend to this?
