Help with possible mobo prob please

Hello. Im not quite sure its a mobo prob but I'm lead to believe this after the following. I bought a new case, I installed my mobo and componets, and powered on. It would post goto windows screen then reboot, it would never get past the windows boot screen. I tried to repair and it would crash half way through with either a blue screen or just reboot on it's own. So I thought ok something is wrong with my HD (it is kinda old and well used), so I go out and buy a nw HD, put it in all snug, start it up insert my windows cd and start to install windows (yes I formated with the HD dick first) it starts to copy files then boom reboot, after several tries and constantly rebooting itself during mid-install, I figured it was a mobo prob. So I asked a friend who said to take the bios battery out for 5 mins the insert and restart and redo my bios (yes I unplug the power cord), I did and no change with either HD. So he said to switch the jumper and clear the CMOS ( yes i put it back to original), so I did and now it will just post, but freezes at the posting creen before it goes into detecting my drives, will not let me enter bios or anthing. I'm stuck, I really hate to buy a new mobo but Im so lost and confused, so here I am asking for all of you smart pc people to help. I have a pretty simple pc no overclocking or gaming, just basically internet and burning stuff is all we use it for, specs are below, and thanks so much for any help!!!!

AMD Athalon XP 1800 (Socket A) w/ a Thermaltake Volcano6 Sink and Fan
512 mb Ram (1 stick)
Gforce2 MX 400 Grafics card (AGP)
80GB Maxtor HD (old one)
250GB Hitachi HD (new one)
PCI Networking card
Running Windows XP Pro SP2

If it comes down to I need a new mobo, can anyone suggest a decent one that will work with my current stuff and fairly cheep. I don't want to spend more than $50, since I don't use it for anything hardcore. Thanks Again!
 
are you trying to copy an old install of XP onto a new computer build? because it won't work most likely....
 
No I'm it's a fresh install. I don't even have the old drive hooked up right now. But the main prob is that now I can't get past the half post. it will only post to the point where it says my cpu and ram amount, then freezes and wont let me go into bios or anywhere. Thanks for trying.
 
Well I decided to try a few more things while I have all you stumped. I reset the cmos again and that seemed to go alright this time, I can get to the bios again but I still have the reboot problem. I tried to start up my old drive (alone) and gets to windows and reboot, so I tried to use my new drive (alone too), I started the windows install and it will just crash or reboot. So I decided to try and take the board and everything else out and just set it on the table (wood table) thinking maybe I have a ground problem between the case and board, but nope still does the same dang thing! I'm so ready to go crazy and just destroy the board, but then I would have to buy a new one, which I am trying to avoid here. So thats my update, I can't see it being my ram or my cpu as it all worked just great before the big case swap. Thanks again!
 
is the fan on your processor H/S spinning? are all the power leads from your power supply connected snugly and try useing your old powersupply from your first case and see if it boots with it.
 
Yes the fan is spinning nice and fast. yes the connectors are snug, tryign the other power supply is a great idea, but I don't have it, it's the whole reason I got a new case, it was only a 150watt PSU and the fan had died in it so I had stuck a case fan in untill I got the new case. I tossed it with the junk case, I guess I can try to run the PSU from the current pc I'm on to it and see. I'll get back to ya soon.... Thanks!
 
hmmm...quite odd...and my friend sitting behind me (who knows nothing about computers) thinks it's an evil cable...

After laughing at him, I then realized your problem might be your IDE cable on your hard drive. Try switching that out.

Also: do you have the hard drive and the cd drive on the same cable? I've seen many problems with both on one cable.
 
Thanks but I have tried that, I've tried 3 different IDE cables. and for the other question, no, I have 2 HDS on the main IDE and 2 roms on the other (not both are hooked up at the moment, and yes I've tried both) I know this is competly CRAZY whats going on with this PC, I've also been told it's just time to get the sledge and have fun, hehehe. I've been trying to find a new board, but I'm not really sure on brands, and everything is so fancy now a days, I just need a simple board to work with my crap, damn I'm so frustrated. Thanks for the great try though!

is the OS drive MASTER and the other SLAVE, same with the CD drives. sounds kinda dumb but i had a similar prob on my old 1700+ a while back, a few jumper changes and BAM it works
 
Thanks for the suggestion but I'm not that blonde. they are hooked up as cable select adn yes they register as the right master and slave. thanks, try again please.
 
OK I got really frustrated so I broke down and bought a new board. While im waiting for it to arrive, a friend gave me some spare ram to just try in it, well it works again, kinda. The first few times it started up it was fine ran like a champ got my new drive all set up, and crash! now when I start it up it will give me a few beeps and shut off, after about 3 retries it will start up fine. so I wandered if this was really a ram problem or truly a board prob so I gave my stick of ram to the friend and he stuck it in a pc and it worked just fine. so just wanted all your opinions on a cause for this? I do relize that my current board the crappy epox is VERY old and the capacitors are starting to leak (read thats acommon prob on another board), but would this cause a malfunction in the boards ram slots? Thanks again to all those who had suggestions!!
