Before I mention anything, I'd like to clarify that I am pretty much a n00b when it comes to building my own PC. My friend however (the one who directed me here to learn about PC hardware) knows about computers and is willing to help me, but he too would be interested on feedback. When it comes to overclocking (which he suggests I don't do since i'm a 'noob,' but I still wish to try to learn it) I know just about nothing - save for the fact that it improves PC peformance at hardware expense.

My current idea of a PC build is this:

Graphics: Nvidia 7950GT
Motherboard: ASUS Deluxe (need help choosing this here...)
RAM: Corsair DDR800 (hopefully i can find one for $150 - $200 - according to my friend)
Processor: Intel Dual-Core 2 Extreme X6600 (need help with this and overclocking)
Coolers: Don't know much here...at all about this...
Hardrive: probably least of my worries though a few suggestions would be nice (its easiest I bet)
Sound Card: also one of the least of my worries (though again suggestions are always cool :) )

Like I said, this is my first time I ever even THOUGHT about building my own PC, and I am assuming that everyone is a LOT more PC-smart than I am. I am willing to learn though, but I'd just need some suggestions/pointers. Also, I realise that since I won't be buying my PC until another month, I shouldn't be looking for PC parts right now, but I still would like to know what sounds good for NOW...so that maybe in the future I will be able to look for my own parts and know what sucks, and what doesn't. Overclocking is my my main issue here, I'd love to pump up my dual-core to 3.0ghz if at all possible...and for that I probably need help with cooling systems---which I know nothing about...

Thanks for those helping a n00b :)

What's your budget? You won't need Corsair ram in order to get a good OC. There's plenty of other brand choices out there within your price range. I'm also unsure which chip you want... as I am unaware of any X6600 Core2Duo. Did you mean the E6600? If so, that's the best choice for a high end system when it comes to price/performance. The new Core2Duos run cooler, consume less power, and outperform even at stock speeds. This allows for some great overclocks without the need for high voltage! Basically, you could reach 3.0Ghz on the stock intel cooler and 1.35v (stock is 1.3v) -- you won't even need ddr2-800 ram for that OC (333*9 = 3.0Ghz, 333Mhz FSB = DDR2-667). Building a system for the first time is easy if you have someone helping you, whether it be in-person or via the internet :D Give us a budget and we can suggest a build.

Thanks for the help :). My budget ranges anywhere from $1000 to $2000...my friend says that I could probably get a good PC around $1000 - $1300. And yeah, you must be right with the E6600...the X apparently is only for the 6800 (according to my friend yet again :) ).

Again, thanks for the help.
