I think im going to make the switch to a DSLR camera sometime soon. I heard nothing but great things with the Canon Rebel XTI series and thinking of picking this one up: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16830120070

I know the lense is probably sub-standard but just until I get the basics with DSLR I think I can live. At the end of summer ill probably pick up a better lense. Is this a good camera to start off at? Should I just buy a body and purchase a decent lense instead of this kit? If so what lense would you recommend? Im just really starting to get into photography and dont much about DSLR and lenses. Any websites that does a great job explaining these topics would be great as well.
 
Yup, great choice.

I might recommend buying just the body and getting the 18-55 IS as it is quite a bit better than the kit lens. Another one you could look into is the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8.

What would be a great all around lenses for both day and night shooting?

I'm starting to really understanding the terms now and can now understand the numbers in the lenses title:p I believe I am at the point now that I just need to make my purchase and starting using a SLR camera and get hands on experience with it.

I just want to shoot scenery, sporting events, outings, etc with the capability of doing it at both day and night.
 
So from the sounds of it you want a zoom, I would probably go with something like the Sigma 18-200mm (OS if possible) or maybe a Tamron 28-300mm (however I have heard that at the long end it is kinda soft best area is supposed to be 50-200mm) or one of the best bang for the buck right now is the new Canon 55-250mm IS, however you will find that most cheaper zooms are going to be in the 3.5-6.0 range which will not be all that great for low light. What I plan on doing is picking up a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 as it has great optics and will do pretty well in low light, then for a longer zoom I will not worry about aperature size.
