I'm going to install my first ever ATI card, and want to make sure I'm doing everything correctly since they can be a little more hassle than nVidia.

It's and HD3850 that will be replacing my 7800GS, both AGP of course.

I've got DriverCleanerPro and the latest drivers from Sapphire, but do I need anything else? I'd like this to go smoothly for a change.

Nope, you should be fine. Run Nvidia's uninstaller first, then driver cleaner. Last, install the ATI drivers.

Holy crap, this thing is big. Got it in, but it's almost touching my Scythe Zipang cooler and it's a pita to get to the AGP lock thingy. I thought my 7800GS was big.

At least it appears to run cooler.
