i have a e6420 with B2 stepping and it idles at around 36c but then i use the internet or anything it jumps to 40c ish then when i get in a game like CS:S it jumped to 50c and this is stock speeds with stock cooler!
please tell me im doing something wrong

i have an after market cooler a zulman 9700 the nvidia one
i just lost all the hardware, if anyone has that h/s and would like to give me the hardwear or the whole thing feel free :]

but back to the subject, can someone help me out here?
i would like to over clock, i had this up to 3.6ghz on air and it idled at like 42c ish and load around 55 so idk whats going on now,
am i losing my cpu?
or do i just need to have better cooling, and if anyone knows any OCing tips please feel free to post them!

please someone help me,

thanks!

Was this with the stock HSF? Also make sure that you have adequate airflow inside your system.

yes this was with stock hsf, and i just replaced the stock thermal paste with OCZ thermal paste, and the teps seem to have gone up to 42c Idle and 55Load,

and i used prime 95 and thems went up to 82c and i stopped it

so help me out :/ please

It sounds like the HS wasn't seated properly after applying the new grease, or too much grease was added. I would remove, clean the HS and cpu, reapply the grease and carefully reseat the HS.

what drgnfang said.

Don't put too much thermal grease on the CPU. Put in as little as neccessary.

i have re-applied the hs and also the thermal paste, i put a pea size dot of it and then placed the hs on and pushed in the Intel HS knobs and turned them so they lock in , it idles around 42 now, but as soon as i minimize a windows or something small it jumps to 48, wtf lol
anything wrong?

Give it some time to set. If OCZ thermal paste is like AS5, it'll take some time for it cure/bake/set. For AS5, thats 200 hours. Temps will usually drop 3-4C during this time.

EDIT: Wait did you put the thermal paste on both the HSF and CPU or just the CPU? Also, I think pea-size is a bit much. Rice-grain size is more like it. Though check out the thermal paste instructions from OCZ.

From OCZ's website (http://www.ocztechnology.com/displaypage.php?name=OCZFreezeInstructions)
OCZ said:
The presence of an Integrated Heatspreader (IHS) on the CPU greatly facilitates the application of the thermal compound. Place a small amount of Freeze (roughly the size of a grain of rice) on the center of the IHS. Lower the CPU cooler directly down onto the CPU to minimize smearing, and push it gently into place. It may appear that only a fraction of the heat spreader has paste installed, the cooler will squeeze the paste out to the appropriate width over time. If necessary, the CPU cooler can be wiggled slightly to facilitate the initial spreading of the thermal compound.

This method minimizes the chances of air bubbles and eliminates insufficient contact in the die area because of unwanted build-up in the periphery. Spreading compound over the entire heat spreader will simply result in a less even, thicker spread, leading to less heat transfer.
So try using less compound, and maybe give the HS a (slight) twist before locking it down.

Honestly I would spring for a half-way decent aftermark cooler before I did that... But if you do want to lap the CPU and/or heatsink a search on these forums, or on google, should turn up several instructions.

From what I've seen around here, 4-8 degrees celsius. It seems more an option for people who just have to have the lowest temp possible.

Kevin

ohh, i thought it like like hardcore lol i was thinking like 10-15c :/

Actual gains tend to be 2-4C. You only see larger gains if something is /really/ wrong beforehand.

Well what's the ambient temperature for you? Maybe your area/house is a bit hot now?

Make sure that your case is has good airflow. Meaning that there aren't some huge clumps of cables right in front of the CPU or impeding airflow inside the case. What case do you have anyway?

Also, you managed to hit 3.6Ghz with the stock HSF with that exact same system and CPU at one point? Or was that with an aftermarket cooler?

If cleaning up your case doesn't work, get a new HSF. The AC7 Pro is somewhat decent for the price ($20). Keeps my E6400 OC'D at 3.2Ghz at 42C idle, 55C under load. Then again during the summer, the temps shot up to 48C idle and 60C under load. Another good HSF to look would be the Scythe SNCJ Ninja.

The ZeroTherm Nirvana NV120 is a bit better than the Scythe. $50 shipped $40 AR at Newegg right now.
