I had just bought this randy dandy new water cooling custom setup.. And it came with some springs right.. well I use the springs to hold down the block and it barely makes contact with the CPU IHS not even the thermal paste sticks onto the cpu block and my temps are out the roof.. I just tried using the block mounted without the springs and it lowered me temps a whole 10c and I think its thermal connection is good now.. Is there a problem holding the block down with nuts only instead of springs?

what block is it? link?

if it is this one...

I believe that the springs on top of the block......

gosh guys i told you so

No! The springs do not go between the mobo and the block. That is what I think the OP is doing and is most certainly the problem. The springs go on TOP of the retention plate of the block. There should be nothing between the block and the motherboard,

Nut - Motherboard - Nut - Block Mounting Plate - Spring - Nut

Is roughly how it should go. You technically dont need the springs but it helps to even out the pressure and makes it more foolproof....assuming of course you use them correctly.

its that block and yea it says to put the springs on top of the block.. i cant seem to get my freaking cpu block to make proper contact with the cpu no matter which way i mount this thing whether its with the springs.. without... dont know what to do.

Your supposed to compress the springs quite a bit, six full turns of the wingnuts, in order to get recommended mounting pressure. What motherboard are you using? Do you have to remove the plastic bracket around the CPU socket. On lots of motherboards this is something that must be done, and it could be that you didn't do this and it is interfering with the waterblock preventing it from making proper contact.

Some pictures would certainly be great and help us get a better idea of what the issue you are experiencing is exactly. You said that you could hardly get the waterblock to touch the core when using the springs. The springs should make no difference at all since they are not between the motherboard and the block.

Well I have no camera right now.. Here is the story. Nothing behind motherboard but 1 washed and 4x threaded screws coming through my Gigabyte DQ6 (removed CrazyCool) and the on the flipside I have 1 washer and 1 wingnut. Then comes the block with 1 washer and 1 spring then 1 washer and the screw. With or without the spring I cannot get the cpu block to pull thermal paste with it when I remove it meaning that if it's touching its probably not a good connection... I can mount the block to the left to the top to the right with the spring without the spring blah blah blah and it's still not giving me optimal temps.. Now when it comes to the "plate" your talking about is it the one that secures the CPU in place no right?

Ok, you have a Skt 775 setup, lots of AMD setups use a plastic clip around the CPU socket for mounting heatsinks, yours doesn't have that. It sounds like you have everything setup correctly. Here is a link for the Swiftech Storm setup guide http://www.swiftnets.com/products/installation_guide_storm.pdf

It should be pretty similar to yours since they both use a universal mounting scheme. When you are checking to see if the mount is good or not, you dont necessarily care if there is paste on the heatsink (although there definitely should be) but you are looking to see if the heatsink has smushed the paste evenly across the processor.

Well I put AS5 on the CPU and evened it out myself before installing.. So I don't know if its being smushed or not. But I do know that I can mount it without the spring and drop my temps a good 10c but still not what it should be because of non-proper connectivity.. I am doing it right and thats the most frustrating part of all.. My GPU which is after my CPU in the loop gets 28c idle while my cpu is idling at around 40-50c

Your not supposed to even it out yourself, so that is mistake #1. I believe you are supposed to either put a line down the middle, or a dab in the middle. Then let the waterblock smush it out. Also, temperature sensors can be off, so you cant always trust those.

Well I ended up cleaning all the paste off and dabbing the middle but when I took the block off of the cpu there was no paste on the block itself and the dab was still unsmushed.. how can I make proper contact with the chip!?

Their instructions calls for putting a drop the size of a small grain of white rice on the center, twisting 2-4 degrees in each direction and then tightening down. I have the MP-05 SP LE and the spring mounting goes a s follows. Put block onto CPU as described then plastic washer, spring, plastic washer and then the knurled nut. Tighten knurled nuts in a figure eight pattern and tighten down to approx 23/32nds between top of mounting plate and top of knurled nut.

I have found that if you have a dual die CPU it is better to put two smaller dobs over the approximate center of each die and then set block.

If when you set the block down on the CPU there is no contact then you need to locate the parts that the block mounting plate is hitting.

Well I figured out that my block was catching on about 4 capacitors that are placed next to the socket. Turned 90* mounted with 1 blob in the middle and let the block spread it. Turned on the system and get 54c dual orthos for 30 minutes.. Isn't that temp a little too high for a 300$ water cooling setup?
