help with memory

Hello all.
I am new to system bulding and this is the second PC i built.
I need help in figuring out the memory and how configure it.
This is the memory i bought http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3089875&CatId=2261
It is rated at 5-5-5-18 1.8v

When i installed it in my machine the motherboard in bios set this values for default

DRAMCAS# latency 5
DRAMRAS# precharge 4
DRAMRAS# to CAS# DELAY 4
DRAMRAS# activate to precache 15
DRAM WRITE RECOVERY TIME 4

In other words i have to change this to 5-5-5-18 and then set volatge to 1.8v correct?
If for example i do not change this values , will my system not work well? will i run into problems?

Also on my second machine that i am building wich consist of an Asus rampage formula x48 and an intel E8400 , i am still deciding what memory to buy. Should i get PC6400 or PC8500?
I know that the JEDEC standard are 5-5-5-18 and 1.8v or 1.9v.
the memory i really wanted to get was this http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=012571&cid=RAM.346.754
but the values for this are 5-5-5-18 at 2.1v.
Now my question is....running at that high voltage is that considered overclocking? will it shorten the life of my components?
And if i set that memory at 5-5-5-18 1.8v i am guessing it will not work correctly?

Anyways thx for the help in advanced and sorry for my bad spelling =)

hi there spaceman.

The memory you installed is guaranteed to work @ 800MHz with 1.8v at 5-5-5-18 timings. You COULD run it at 5-4-4-15 timings but it might make the system unstable. If you are not worried about overclocking go ahead and set it to 5-5-5-15 @ 1.8v and 800mhz.

Your second question is intruiging. are you going for DDR3? i ask this because the only reason you go X48 is because you choose DDR3 instead of DDR2. X48 is essentially an X38, just binned higher to make sure it does indeed function at 1600mhz fsb (my current maximus formula is working at 1600mhz flawlessly) if you are going for a top of the line motherboard and cpu, i recommend you wait a little while untill ATi and nVIDIA refresh their video cards (may/june/july we will know exactly when they are going to do it) current cards will be found dirt cheap and you will be able to pickup a pair of current video cards or a better next gen video card for the same price)

Hi and thx for the help.
The asus rampage formula i ahve only supports ddr2
But for me it is ok since i did not have enough money to get ddr3 at the moment :(
I could use the same memory that i am using ont he other pc the one at 5-5-5-18 but i wanted to get something better.
My only concern is if i do get the pc8500 one rated at 5-5-5-15 2.1v will i be able to set those timing even if i will not overclock the cpu?
also 2.1v should not harm my system correct and ovviously i can notr run that memory at 1.8v correct?
sorry for this silly questions lol but i am still learning .

atm i have a radeon 3870x2 i play UT3 with it on a 22 inch monitor and i am more then satisfied with the performance , but i will defenetly pick up those new ATI/AMD cards coming out soon =)
