Help with LCD TV HDMI resolution

Not sure if I should put this in the Video Card forum or not. I have a 2nd monitor I was using VGA for dual screen support. I picked up an HDMI cable hoping for a better picture but for some reason it wont put out 1440/900 @ 60hz over HDMI. When I force it to 1440x900 at 30hz the picture is shrunken down and blurry. Any fix for this? This is with an ATI 5870.
 
What monitor do you have?

Is it video card HDMI output to monitor HDMI input or something different? Does the monitor have a DVI input?
 
Not sure what you're doing exactly, but try labeling the HDMI input on the TV as a PC input.
 
I think I tried that. It's a viewsonic N1930W. Using just a strait HDMI cable right out the back of the 5870 into the monitor. Just trying to do dual screens with extended desktop.
