Hello,

I'm in the market for a new monitor. The market is overwhelming because there are so many too choose from. I've been looking at a few websites: Amazon, BestBuy and Newegg. I will be using the monitor for a multitude of purposes. I am going to be making the purchase around Black Friday. Are there any specific things I should be looking for beyond the requirements below?

Requirements:

1) 24"ish Widescreen LCD monitor (I'm not exactly sure if that is too big of a screen for me to look at. I'd be exactly 2 feet away from the monitor screen).

2) Height adjustable.

3) Sturdy stand. (I was going to buy the Samsung P2450H but I saw just how unstable the stand was on Youtube and decided to pass).

4) HDMI and DVI connection.

Questions:

A) Which brands are the best? I know that Samsung, Asus, and LG manufacture the most monitors.

The ONLY brand that I will not select is Dell.

You need to describe your uses: ie gaming, movies, photo editing, text/internet.

You also need to get over your aversion to Dell. Their ultrasharp line are some of the best monitors out there.

Firstly, I did state what I would be using the monitor for.

Secondly, Samsung makes most of Dell's panelss so if I had a choice I don't want a Dell logo on my desk.

Depends on what monitor you buy. LG makes the panels in Dells IPS monitors. And I don't know what you got against Dell, they make some decent consumer displays and they have excellent looks (subjective) and ergonomics. Going for a consumer display and not at least looking at what Dell has to offer is silly.

You don't specify any price range or really what you prefer, regardless of what type of panel you buy there are going to be drawbacks and not taking into account what your preferences are it's going to be impossible for you or us to make a relevant decision.

All that aside I'd recommend HP ZR24W, it's IPS and it's sRGB and in my book that makes it the best allround display in it's class.

Also, there is no brand that is the best. You have to look at specific models. Depending on what you want all brands will have crappy monitors.

While it's true you can likely find the same panel in another model, you may not find it with the same features, design or price point.

Second, "a multitude of purposes" is a generic statement that tells us nothing about what you'll use it for. For one person, that could mean gaming and movies. For another, it could mean text editing and photo editing and a shit load of porn.

He wants HDMI. Although, there's always HDMI/DVI adapter since the monitor has no speakers anyway.

I didn't specify a price range because I don't have one. But, lets say no more than $400. Why would there be drawbacks no matter what monitor I buy? The best monitors should be able to handle practically any type of graphics.

I don't like Dell because I think they suck and I don't want anything on my desk saying Dell. I don't want anyone seeing the name Dell on my desk. Their customer services sucks and all the products I've owned (including my last Dell monitor) was a over-yped piece of plastic. It always make me laugh when someone spends 4k on a rig, with flashing lights, water cooling system, the whole works, and then has a Dell monitor.

As far as the best, who sells the most monitors in the U.S. besides Dell?
Funny, I googled the following phrases
"Dell Monitors suck" - 1,580 hits
"Samsung monitors suck" - 47 hits

If you plug in headphones in the audio out, then you'd need HDMI right?

It doesn't have an audio out to begin with.

The best monitors most certainly don't handle all "types of graphics".
IPS has white glow.
*VA has gamma shift.
TN has extremely poor viewing angles.

All major types of panels have serious defects. No matter which you choose it is going to be significantly worse than any of the others in certain scenarios.

Okay, case in point.
Games: you are going to get claims that TN is the only sensible solution for games (not my opinion though).
Photo editing: For photo editing people are going to say that TN is simply out of question.

Regardless, you have to compromise.

I don't care about Dell builds. I care about Dell monitors and if you ask in this part of the forum (which is about displays) you are going to get a lot of praise for the Dell customer service. Anyway, your loss. I don't care.

As I said, there is no "best brand". Dell makes crappy monitors. Dell makes great monitors. Samsung makes crappy monitors. Samsung makes great monitors. Is that so hard to grasp?

The Samsung (P2450H) display you mentioned is TN, 16:9, has a bad stand and glossy frame. In my opinion you couldn't do much worse even if you tried.

You get what you pay for.

I'm standing by my recommendation of the HP ZR24W.
