Hey Everyone,

I'm at work right now and I'm trying to set the following up: I work in the rural sociology department of my college and we have our own web and DNS servers. We're changing our name, so we want the address www.website2.com to point to the website already at www.website1.com. I setup IIS on our webserver to have multiple identies for website1 (i.e. in IIS I added an identity that points www.website2.com to the IP address of website1), however, according to some of the guides I've read I also need to set up DNS to forward on the DCES request. As my boss is gone and I'm a bit of a server noob, can anyone help me out on how I go about adding these entries in the DNS? I've made a few attempts, but none of which have worked.

Thanks!

(Note: these are not the actual website names. I figured it was obvious, but thought I'd mention it just in case :) )

You might want to figure out if you're using your OWN DNS or not for the websites in question. If it's on an external dns, then you don't really need to bother with your internal dns (except maybe changing entries)

If you're using IIS, whate IIS are you using and if you're using hostheader site or not. IIS 6 does ok with hostheader for HTTP but not quite too well with HTTPS (there is a workaround).

I'm using IIS 6 which is configured on the web server which hosts our website and it's using HTTP host headers that allows the first website to have multiple identities. We are using our own DNS, as far as I know. When I check any computer's ipconfig, they list 4 DNS servers, and the first 2 (and I think the last) are servers that we have in the building.

I feel like somehow I need to set things up correctly in the forward lookup zone because for domain 1 (for simplicity's sake, we'll call D1). D1 has it's own zone in the Forward Lookup Zones and has a www entry which is a CNAME entry to reroute www.D1 to our web server. Am I right in my line of thinking here? I think I somehow need to reroute any requests to www.website2.com (which would be D2) to the web server in D1? I'm not sure if I have the idea right, and feel free to correct me if I'm not, but if I'm on the right track, what is the method of implementation?

That may be the case that your domain is using your DNS server, but doesn't mean people on the outside of your network is. That's why I said that you gotta make sure that your DNS is actually being used for name resolution. Otherwise any changes you make to your own DNS is not going to do you any good for people outside of your network.

Try internic.com and check if your domain is really associated with your dns.
