Help with gaming sound

I used a creative X-Fi for awhile. My Asus Crossfire motherboard is supposed to have this "amazing" sound. Problem is that when I overclock, the sound (across optical cable) starts gettting these loud pops. I was hoping that the sound through this motherboard would eliminate the need for an audio card.

I've left a few threads on the support forum that no one ever responds to over there. There are no other complaints. The audio popping is OBNOXIOUS - I think I may just have a defective board.

So I also notice that while playing Skyrim if I walk past someone speaking I do not hear the volume switch to my rear speakers.

I am hearing fine surround sound from my back speakers in movies.

Reasoning through that problem, my mind drifts to the Creative Alchemy / Nvidia "Soundstorm" discussions of years back and "on the fly Dolby Digital" decoding that totally confused me no matter how many articles I read.

I'm looking for some help here. Should I RMA my motherboard? Is my experience with Skyrim showing me I should go ahead and get a dedicated sound card?
