Help with games randomly chugging in FPS

I am finding in games such as HL2 and Far Cry that at some points, the FPS drops to literally 0 -.1 FPS, and then will occasionally return to normal. I am not referring to stuttering, as it can last for 30-seconds to a minute. I am trying to determine if it scene specific. I have only one monitor enabled, so the FX5200 shouldn't be an issue, but it may be as I know it's presence in the system causes trouble with 3dMark 2005.

Any assistance would be appreciated.
 
1280x1024, 0-2x AA. It isn't simply dropping in FPS, it lieterally comes to a stand still
 
memory leak maybe? do you have your chipset drivers installed? this happened to me awhile back without the drivers......

but I remember this happenining to my old 9800xt in CS 1.6 lol...
 
Yeah, all the drivers are up to date. I wonder if it is the other card. Far Cry randomly crashes, and at some parts, it will slow down to ridiculous speeds, then come back to normal. most benchmarks generally show the comp to be performing to spec.
 
take it out and test it!! wont take so long :) I just reseated my hyper 6 this whole time I was gone :) now I get 44 load!! OMG!!

anyways you should if taking teh card out doesn't work... run memtest or prime95 to test if the ram isn't faulty.. and when did this started happening anyways? after u put the second card in or what?
 
Hmm. Is there a PCIe equivalent of AGP FastWrites? That would be my first guess.
 
No its a bug in the latest forceware I think. Happens to me as well, 6800 Ultra AGP on a Nforce 3 board. People have been reporting the issue sporatically so its hard to pin down. I know reverting to an older forceware driver set made it go away. And yes fast writes is off...its not a fast writes issue.
 
Well, Maybe you're CPU might bottle neck after being under such a load at 4GHz! P4's tend to get hott... but an OC to 4GHz, well, what kind of cooling do you have on it. If you're CPU is indeed getting to hott after being in a game for a while might look into more cooling or droping the OC, because that can case a bottle neck and choke you're FPS.
 
It's a WC'd p4, load temps doesn't go higher than 35-40. Have Prime95'd, Memtested, etc. All stable. Just some points in games it gets SUPER chuggy. Another example, in far cry, and in half life, when looking into large expanses..the slow down is ridiculous. (Far expanses being large open areas)
 
to be the point of being damaged? I don't think that would do it, and it happens whether oc'd or not
