Help with FX 5200??

Hey all,

Im a newbie to this forum so excuse any stupid questions. I have a PNY Geforce FX 5200 Ultra 128 DDR graphics card. I know its probably a crap card but good enough for who its for. Thing is no matter what game I thow at it (splintercell, halo, flight sim 2004..ect) it will not play it.

Generally it will get through the cinematic stuff but when it comes to game play it crashes out every time. Most of the time so bad I have to reboot. The factory drivers that came with it wont even work, the screen is very distorted with lines through it. So I went and got the 61.77 drivers from Nvidia and they stopped that from happening but it still locks up everytime with every thing I throw at it. I also tried the 44.03 and 53 series drivers with the same effects.

At this point I dont know what to do, have I got a bad card? My system specs are as follows:
P3 866
512 mg ram (I tried upto 1gb of ram with no help)
running on WINXP PRO

The motherboard is made by toshiba. As far as overheating goes, my processor has a huge copper cooler from Cooljag and an 80 mm sunnon case fan. The card itself has enough aluminum to chill mexico and is not hot to the touch when it locks up. Actually the memory heatsinks are only slightly warm and the processor heatsink is cool.

Someone help??

ouch, pretty old proc you got, but it still shouldnt be locking up, make sure the GPU is getting good contact with its heatsink, and make sure you have the newest mobo drivers, if all else fails, reformat.
 
Geforce FX 5200 is AGP 4x/8x only, yes? Could be wrong, but concidering the age of your system-- Is your motherboard 4x compatible?

I'm not sure, but if it wasn't wouldn't it fry his mobo/and or gfx card? I could be wrong but 2x and 4x/8x use different voltages right?
 
I appreciate all your info. I have considered many of these factors. My brother has another computer which isnt much better than mine but at least it may give me some idea of whether or not its the card or the computer.

I will put it in his machine today and check the heat sink and things on the GPU. I'll let you know my findings.

Heres another little bit of info. When I was working on this last night I noticed that the fan on my processor cooler was not running. So when I touched the heatsink needless to say it was hot. So I went to the bios where the hardware monitoring is and the cpu temp was 124 degrees. So I thought it may be overheating and that was my problem.

My motherboard has three fan connectors, 1 labeled CPU fan the others say Power fan and Chassis Fan. No matter what I did I could not get power from the CPU fan output. So I moved the connector to the power fan and it fired the fan right up and now my processor temp is 75 degrees but the graphics still lock up. So my question here is my motherboard having power difficulties? If power is not getting to the CPU fan connector then maybe its not getting power or at least the correct amount of power to other places? Im running on a 250w power supply. I would have though surely that this would be sufficient? Right now I have 2 hard drives, floppy drive, cd-rom, 80 mm case fan, huge CPU cooler, graphics card (has to be powered via molex connector) and of course the motherboard that are attached to the power supply. I tried unhooking 1 of the hard drives but still had the same effect.

Thanks for the input but I finally figured out what the problem was. The RAM...

I had 2 512mb sticks in this computer. My brother had some 128mb pc133 sticks he brought to me. So I put 256mb worth in and wala! Problem was solved! Played everything I had very well.

I am new to pc gaming but I have just played Halo and Splintercell on this card and the graphics totally blow away the PS2 and Xbox. It was also much faster game play with no glitching. I hear people thowing the fx5200 down every where and was really disheartened cause I thought I had bought a real grap card. Either the Ultra has a real advantage over the standard fx chipset or Im just that new....but I dont see a problem with this card other than its picky about what RAM is ran with it.
