First of all, I work at a hardware store. I have frequented the forums for a while and have heard references to "compression fittings", I think these are the fittings that we sell in the plumbing department at my work, I'm not sure though.
Also, we sell vinyl tubing, could that be used for a water cooling setup?
Is 1/2in a good size? It has 5/16 ID.
I'm just wondering because they might be really cheap with me employee discount.

Those are compression fittings. They are super neat, the top screws off and you slide the tube on to a less interesting looking barb, and then you put the top back on and it covers the the whole barb and cinches down on the tubing. It replaces the need for clamps.

There are generally three sizes people use in computer water cooling:1/4" ID, 3/8" ID, and 1/2" ID (and occasionally 7/16" ID.) You can probably make it work with 3/8" tubing with some wriggling.

Truth be told tubing and fittings are generally the LEAST expensive parts of a WC system. The pump, the water blocks, and the radiator are murder on the wallet sometimes, so keep and eye out for those. Tubing, clamps, reservoirs, t-lines, these things will cost you money, but on the order or a couple of dollars, generally.
 
Fittings and tubing is very, very cheap online (Masterkleer tubing is 60c a foot, and almost ANY product comes with regular barbs... No need for compression fittings).

The problem with vinyl tubing is that it's very, very rigid... And hardware store compression fittings won't have the right thread (where it screws into the block)...

I had heard some people say that they didn't use compression fittings because they were to expensive, so i got worried.

They use worm clamps or zip ties generally. The idiots use nothing at all and wait for their WC system to explode.

Unless you use masterkleer... I still have to use an Xacto knife to remove my tubing from 1/2" barbs :eek:

There was someone at XS that didn't clamp their tubing at their pump outlet...when their sysetm exploded they were like wtf why'd it explode --; If anywhere, ALWAYS clamp the outlet of your pump as that's where the msot pressure is.

And sorry my typing is retarded, stillnot used to my MSI wind keyboard

Do you remember what pump it was? I'm thinking that a XSPC modded DDC3.2 or something with 1/2" metal barbs would actually be quite dangerous to run without clamps... I'm a stalwart MCP655 user though, Christ, I have no idea how masterkleer would pop off that plastic perfect seal molded exit :eek:

I can bench press my own weight, and I couldn't get the damn tubing on easily :p
