Someone gave me an EMAC. It has OS X, 1 gig processor, 128 mb memory, 40 gb hd. It boots up into log in screen just fine. I do not have the password for it. I am trying to get it working for my 4 year old son.I am not opposed to buying software if need be. I know nothing about MACs. Is there a way to change the username and password? If I were to buy software for it, how would you go about redoing the os? Any help that anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.
 
If you can get an OS X disk, you can put that in the CD ROM tray, hold down C on the keyboard when you power it up (the eMac will boot from the CD) and you should be able to change the password from within the installer). There should be an application in a drop down menu when the CD has booted for changing passwords if you click on the little Apple logo in the upper left of the screen.

Or, you could re-install OSX if you get a set of the disks. Thats the one way I know of, others may have a different method.
 
There is a way to erase the netinfo database, and get it back to the first setup screen. Commands are in parenthesis.

Boot up in single user mode(Hold down Command+Option+S+U after you hear the gong)
Remount the drive writeable(mount -uw /)
Delete the local netinfo database(rm -r /var/db/netinfo/local.nidb)
Delete the .AppleSetupDone file(rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone)
Reboot(reboot)

It will reboot, and you'll be greeted with the original OSX setup screen. My advice is setup an admin user for you, and setup another one of the kid with non-admin access.
 
I just bought a set of disks off of E_BAY for $13 shipped. Thanks for the suggestions.
