Help with dual gpu on single psu

Hi,

I'm new here and I seek knowledge. I have a problem with my set-up.

MOBO : msi 970A-g43
CPU : amd sempron 145
GPU 1 : Asus 280x direct cu II TOP
GPU 2 : Asus 280x direct cu II TOP
PSU : EVGA supernova NEX750G

So my problem is this. I cannot make both gpu work at the same time. I have ubuntu on a usb stick and both gpu alone are doing fine, but if I put both together, the ubuntu UI doesnt show or shows-up with really really ugly/weird glyphs and pixels of the wrong color everwhere. The crappy graphics are appearing just after the ubuntu logo finished loading. Before the logo everything is fine.

I figured 61 A on 4 rails would be plenty for 2 video cards and one low-end cpu. I plugged 1 gpu on 12v2(VGA1 and VGA2) and 1 gpu on 12v4 (VGA3 and VGA4). The cpu is on 12v3 and the mobo is on 12v1.

Is my psu the problem? What am I doing wrong?

Thank you for your insight.
If you want more details or other stuff, don't hesitate!

Any chance you can test with a Windows install?

Could be a driver issue w/ Linux it may seem.

Odd symbols and incorrectly colored pixels typically point to a faulty GPU.

Well, I don't have spare hard drive to install windows :(

Well, both GPU are working fine by themselves. Its only when I put both on the mobo that the glitches appear.

What would tell me that it is the PSU that is the problem? It there a common effect with underpowered cards? I just want to rule out this possibility as soon as possible to work on other leads. Thank you!

Sadly, yes. My needs are not for gaming though.

Which means they most likely don't need to be in Crossfire since most applications that take advantage of the GPUs computing power do so on an individual basis unlike gaming where it needs them run as a single unit.

Well, I never said they were in crossfire, did I?

They are both plugged into pcie without the crossfire wire.

My mistake, I assumed when you said you put them together you meant you crossfired them.

Sounds like a driver issue either way.

Can you boot into the shell without the GUI?

edit
Actually you can install drivers on a single GPU, both aren't really needed to get them installed.
