Help with crashed i5 750 build

Hey all, I just put together a Core i5 750 and MSI P55-GD55 mobo with 2x2GB Kingston DDR3 1600 8-8-8-24/1.65v and my old GTX 260. Board kind of sucks but I got it practically free as a combo with the i5. Got it running at 4GHz stable (200x20) at 1.35v (as high as the board would go) and the RAM at 1.65v loosened to 9-9-9-24. 4.2GHz (210x20, RAM at 1680/1.67v) ran games and 3D rendering apps fine all day but would fail Prime within minutes. Last night I clocked to 4.1 (205x20, RAM 1640) and ran Prime, no errors for about 20 minutes and temps <~70C.

Then my screen went black and I'm pretty sure I smelled burnt electronics - but it was gone in a matter of seconds. Now the system powers on, fans and lights come on but won't POST and I get no display. Examined the RAM and CPU and nothing looks/smells damaged. Only LED on the board is indicating "1 phase" power mode. I'm not sure but I want to say it used to be 4 phase. Any thoughts as to what might have happened?
 
I'm using a Corsair 750tx - should be plenty powerful. I put all my old components back in (e6600@3.4, 2x2GB OCZ 1066 DDR2, eVGA 680i) and it's all working fine - so the PSU and graphics card are okay. Man.. I've never burned up a motherboard before. Any idea what caused this? Too much OC? It was kinda a cheapie board..
 
No beeps or error codes. Doesn't even respond to power/reset buttons - have to yank the cord to power it off. Something's definitely fried. And the system would at least POST with a bad CPU or RAM, right? I almost wanna take the couple heatsinks off the mobo and see if anything looks burned up..
 
Yeah, you should still be able to post. Don't take the heatsinks off or mess with anything. Just do a RMA or return it (did you get the bundle that fry's had the other day?).
 
I took the sinks off just to see - couldn't find any blown MOSFETs or capacitors anywhere on the board. And yeah, this is a Fry's bundle this week. Decent deal but I want a better board anyways. I called them up a bit earlier and they said if the board was defective they would exchange it. I think I'm going to exchange the board for a new one tomorrow, then take everything else back after that, so at least I won't actually be returning dead merchandise. Sorta.

Why the heck would you do this? If you want a refund, just return what you have now and tell them its busted.

Well you never know what you're gonna get with Fry's customer service. I figured asking for an exchange would decrease the chances they'd try and make me RMA it. But you're right, I'm too lazy to make two trips to Fry's anyways. So I'm gonna return it this evening.

(Any thoughts as to what might have happened) Funny that you say this in youre post, you know what happened to it. You ran the board cpu mem all out of there specs and wonder why this happened, this is a chance game overclocking and shit happens. But if my board goes bad, I dont blame the company or the place I bought it from for my neglect on the parts. In understanding whats going to happen the next time you blow it up, if I was frys I would tell you to suck eggs. Buy another one and another one, dont pass the burden of price inflation to the other respectable people who purchase the same product. Just cause you took a chance and it did not work out, for alot of people it does workout but thats the nature of overclocking and the chances you take no matter what price you have to pay. You can buy a enzo ferrari or a chevy colbalt and run them both with out oil and you know what the outcome will be, but in the end the manufacture is going to say FU (Youre Fault). This is not a flame or attack on you just sometimes you have to pay to play the game. Ive been there done it shit has happened to me also and other die hard people here kyle and everyone, harddrives burned up, videocards gone and motherboards toast, but I took them chances and still do but I payed for what I have done and replaced them. As always speed kills and so can overclocking.
 
i got that same deal. 750 with the gigabyte ud3. ran fine at 3.2 for a long time. then my system started freezing when surfing. just surfing. it was fine playing bad company 2 but would freeze when surfing. really weird. fiddled around with bios and other settings. still kept freezing.

put it at stock. would play bad company 2 then freeze. kept freezing when surfing too.

looked at temps and it looked like it kept overheating...would get to 60c and shut down.

wont even finish booting into windows now before freezing.

what you all think? board or cpu or both?
