Just put together a NForce2 system with ASUS board, 2500+ XP CPU and a WD hard drive running Window XP PRO with SP1. This is a new install with barley anything installed for software. I have installed the lates drivers for the motherboard. I have noted that the harddrive light shows activated every couple of seconds and you can hear the hard drive seek. I have plenty of free momory and even with program closed, the drive will still seek every second or so. Any thoughts?

i was having a similar probem...i ran sandra sisoft and the drive benched at 10000K/sec boo, I reformatted and my problems went away. yea back up to 30000K/sec WD80GB 8mb buffer IDA

could it have been some kinda nasty file that was causing it to freak out for some reason? i don't know any way to check and see what file the HDD accessed last. well, i take that back, becasue i have McAfee and that will tell you what the last file scanned (and presumably accessed) was. hm... yeah, i wonder why it would do that???

lol, yeah i'm thinking about getting around to changing that... expect the worst, prepare for the best, as they say. or something like that, anyway... heh

Id start with

Windows Explorer > Rclick (each partition) > Properties > General Tab > Uncheck "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching" > Apply > Check Apply changes to X:\, subfolders and files > OK

you could also employ DiskMon to track down what is happening (and there is alot more than you might imagine) :p
also try Diskview both are freeware

and Welcome to the Forums ;)

I'm having similar issues. Well, it isn't exactly an issue, but it's annoying to hear the seek every second or two. I have completely uninstalled the Indexing Service, so it can't be that. Specs in sig.

Have you tried any scans for bugs or Trojans?

I have run spyware to remove any offending software. Nothing found.

Any posibility that the Nvidia IDE drivers are causing the problem and that reverting back to the MS IDE drivers would help?

Should be... where do I find that? :p

Start > Run > (type) compmgmt.msc > Device Manager > IDE ATA\ATAPI Controller > DClick the channel in question > Advanced Settings Tab > check the device in question (0 or 1), "Current Transfer Mode" > if not enabled in the Transfer Mode box select "DMA if Available"

Reboot repeat to > Verify current transfer mode

I checked HD speed using Si Sandra. Hard drive transfer rates were good at 36K

I disabled the indexing service. This did eliminate a lot of the random seeking.

All my drives are set to DMA.

well the rest could easily be virtual memory

regarding the potential for trojans\worms
the easiest way to spot that is by bandwidth usage and the activity level of unknown processes, (or of course scanners)

might want to checkout this thread

while there are a few viruses that will fill up a HDD with junk, its more common to catch a worm and they typically are accessing the HDD much
