i recently reformated my uncles emachine celeron 2.66ghz 256mb ram

at first i thought it was the cdrom drive not being able to read my cd. so i took out his harddrive and put it into my computer and installed windows and everything was working perfectly. so i then took his harddrive out of my computer and put it back into his emachine. but once i turn on the computer it freezes at the windows home xp screen and the progress bar just stops.

things i have tried:
changed out wiring to hardrive
unplugged unnecesary drives such as cd drive, usb port ect ect
i tried going into safe mode and it gets stuck on this line:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows\Syste32\Drivers\Mup.sys

im stumped....

Which motherboard is in there?

Sometimes the cause can be the antivirus protection in certain BIOS. In my experience its usualy Trend Chipguard's BIOS AV that causes issues. What the AV does, is prevent changes being made to the MBR (Master Boot Record).

If it is enabled you may try to turn off the virus protection (In BIOS) and see where that leads you.

Other techs have reported flashing the MB bios to the latest version cured this error. If you have never done this before do some heavy searching in these forums as well as google before flashing the bios. Also read the manual for that specific motherboard, which can be found on the manufacturers web page.

You can also opt to send the motherboard to the OEM and have them flash the bios but this usualy comes at a fee.

Lasty do you have any PCI devices (cards) plugged in? try removing the PCI devices, including any network cards or sound cards, down to just the graphics card one at a time, powering on each time, to see if its a card that is causing it. You could even swap the video card if you have a spare.

...yep. When windows installs it configures itself specifically for the machine it's in. Motherboard chipset, I/O addresses, etc. would quite likely be different between machines. Re-load the OS with the hard drive in the machine it's going to live in and I'll bet it works fine....

well, if i do it in the emachine the progress bar just freezes and i can never complete the install. it just always hangs

alright ill tryand help trouble shoot the other problem...

I would start off with guessing it is the CDROM or HD. like someone said scan for bad sectors or try a different CDROM drive. it could be a bad hd, but chances are that its a bad CDROM first i think and if that is the case then swap in your CDROM drive into his computer and try that. That would be my first step, how does the CD itself look? scratches and whatnot could cause that problem as well.

I'd say the hard drive is likely good since it took the install in another workstation. Either, as RHollister suggested, check the CD-ROM, or (not to beat a dead horse, but) test the memory.
