Help with Carputer for Jetta

First off, sorry if this is in the wrong forum. I figured "Small Form Factor" fit this project quite well.

OK, so here's the deal. A friend of mine wants a computer that will fit where his deck is right now (It's a '96 Jetta). Where are good places to find information, tutorials, stuff like that, and, most importantly, is this possible (IE, are M-ITX mobos small enough). As far as fabbing parts and building the system, I've got that under control.

I'm not new to building computers, but I am new to the Mini-ITX world, so any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

You're going to have to be pretty damn handy to get even a board that small to fit into the stock dash location. You still need a power supply, a converter, a harddrive, and an optical drive. And the optical drive is the same same as the placeyou want to put it.

You could try finding a nano-itx motherboard, Via makes it, but finding it and using it in the carputer would be cool.

Here is a few links about the MB:

Epia-n

if you looked on the via website under where to buy and choose your location, you could find someone to special order it for you.

Something I found searching last night is a 90W PSU that is the same width as the board. Mounted behind the mobo, it shouldn't pose a problem. Quick question, since I don't have a car in my room: Is a deck the same size as an optical drive?

I am going to go out on a limb and say 'yes' or 'very close'.

You could try and do something with a laptop drive, maybe, since they are a shade smalled. A laptop HD is also usually preferable, as they are small and made to be shaken a tad bit.

There's actually a thread around here about a guy cramming a board and slimdrive CD, plus a laptop HDD into a 5.25" bay, so I might use that.

Now, of course, the easy way to give this guy what he wants is to bolt a Mini-ATX board into his glovebox, but where's the fun in that?!

Why not get a really cheap tablet and mount it in the dashboard? Touch screen, runs cool, built in, can be wired for 12v easy, power friendly, ect.

not as bad maybe with this case
http://www.cartft.com/catalog/il/50

travla makes a case that is DIN size. It has a power supply in it and it takes the mini -itx ff (epia via m10000) as long as you mount it on top, you should be able to dissipate enough heat.

Check out Mini ITX or Epiacenter both of those sites have a wealth of information in the Mini ITX motherboards and their many uses. Currently I'm looking at these sights to get information on building a tiny PC in either a broken SNES that I have laying around or in a lunch box.
