ok i bought this apc 500 and i have used them before but this is the problem. When i experience a power surge i doesnt keep the computer on at all it basically just shuts it off. It only kept in on 1 time and that was for a minute. Now the power is on the the unit and it seems to be working fine except for this. The battery to it is connected as well. What could be the problem.
 
Is 500 Volt-Amps enough to keep the attached load running? 500 VA is approxamently 350 Watts (at 115 volts). With a computer and a CRT monitor that could easially overload the unit.
 
There are a few potential reasons why it isn't working, among them blown fuses and bad batteries. I've had two UPS backups die on me, both times it was the battery. When I pulled them out, they tested the correct voltage, but when reading voltage under load (such as with a car battery tester) they revealed that they were incapable of holding a charge. However, both of these units were over 3 years old. For a new battery backup to go bad soon after purchase, which it sounds like you're saying happened in your case, it quite strange.

My old one was massively overloaded (350VA APC unit powering a computer and monitor that my new backup says draws 254 Watts at idle, and WELL over 300 watts at load), but it still worked time and again, so that may not be the issue. If you did manage to overload it, however, it could be a blown fuse, or the battery might have overheated and leaked. The reason it works now with the power running is because it only switches to battery power when it detects the need. Since something is wrong with yours, when it switches to battery there's still no power, so it's going to cut off.
 
I'd have to say it's very likely a defective battery or maybe the switch thing inside it (that switches from AC power to the battery backup power) isn't working right.

Personally at my dad's place I have a 300VA APC unit powering a 17" Viewsonic Monitor (rated at 1.5 amps), an Athlon XP 2500+ system with an Enermax 350watt PSU and the DSL modem. I have had no problem with it whatsoever running this stuff. It runs for aproximately 6 minutes which when you are using the machine is enough time to decide if your oging to save your work or keep working until the power comes back on. I used to have an Acer Acerview 76e 17" CRT hooked up that was rated at 2.0amps and with that monitor on it lasted just around 4 minutes or so.


Also... I'm sure this isn't the case but you have had the UPS plugged in and turned on for a day or so before trying to test it right? As far as I know the batteries would need to be charged. I don't know that they would come pre-charged out of the box.
