Help with AM2 vs. AM3 for cooling

I just purchased the new AMD Phenom II x4 955 BE for my GIGABYTE GA-MA790FXT-UD5P AM3 board in a XCLIO Windtunnel case. (all findable at newegg) So, my question is I'd like to get a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme, but didn't know if A.) it would even fit in my case (the case is a full tower and huge! so, don't think it should be a problem) or B.) if it'll even go with my socket. i see a backplate is needed for AM2 boards and such, but i can't find anything online about AM3's! if it won't work, can anyone recommend anything else? i'd like to get a heatsink ordered today so i can get my new rig up and running. Thanks for your help!
 
afik am3 is the exact same thing as am2 but with support for faster ram (ddr3) and ht link and stuff, the am3 cpu's work in am2+ motherboards so im asumming im correct on this, about 80% sure, as long as it mounts on an am2 it should mount on an am3, my mounting kits for am2 work with my am2+ stuff, also the TRUE thould fit in that case, it looks pretty big :) i like those fans...but yea should be good
 
I put a Xigmatek S1283 on my ASUS AM3 board. That HSF lists support for AM2 and AM2+ and it mounted up with no problems to the mounting bracket which comes stock with the Mobo. THe mounting setup is indeed identical for AM2 and AM3. I haven't checked recently but the Xigmatec was about $27 after rebate on newegg about 3 weeks ago with free shipping. It uses direct-touch heatpipes and rifle bearing fan(any 120mm fan will mount up) which are included unlike the TRUE.
 
I can't say for sure that AM2 and AM3 sockets are exactly the same for mounting tabs, but they probably are. The physical sockets are the same other than a few extra pins, so I would expect the outside of the socket where the mounting tabs are to be the same.

The regular S1283 appears to come with the clip for AMD mounting (and also the push pin Intel mounts). The S1283V is the black plated version, and includes the bolt-through kit also. The regular S1283 is $37-$5MIR and the S1283V is $40. The cheapest I've seen the bolt-through kit is like $7 shipped, so you might as well get the S1283V if you want the bolt-through mount. Xigmatek's page specifies the bolt-through kits only for Intel LGA775/1366, not for AMD sockets.
 
754 939 am2 am2+ am3 all use the same mounting bracket.. amd has never changed it.. theres no reason to change it.. its far superior to intels crap ass pin mounting.. the only problem with running the rifle coolers is that they are oriented so that the fans blowing toward the top of the case instead of the back of the case..
 
thanks for the help! got the heatsink and fits like a charm. also got a fan mounting kit and a nice Noctua 120 MM fan attached to it. that fan with the case's built in 2x250 mm as well as my vid card's 90 mm fan make sure heat shouldn't be a problem. still gotta load everything up, but temps should be good!
