Hello all,

I built a matx system about a year ago with advice gleaned from here. It was a painless build and has been a great addition to the office. The AGP videocard died a couple of weeks ago and this has given me the opportunity to rebuild it with a new motherboard. I wanted to bounce some things off of those of you with more experience and get some feedback.

To start with I ordered a new P5E-VM HDMI motherboard. With the ability to overclock and play with settings to my hearts content it strikes me as a sensible start.

In thinking about a new processor/memory I have to confess I'm drawn to the new QX9650 Yorkfield processor. It would work with the P5E-VM which supports its FSB. It's a bit pricer than what I had in mind but I'm looking to use this box for at least a couple of years. I'm trying to decide if I will overclock and that's weighing on my memory choices. I think I need to go with the full 8gb the board will support but haven't come to a conclusion on the speed.

All of this will get dropped into an Silverstone SG-01. My previous board was also socket 775 based and I think I'll be able to use the Silverstone NT-06 cooler and the same 700w psu. (I'm using the short cable kit.) Hard drives are two of the 150gb Raptors. OS will be a copy of XP pro retail I own unless someone can offer some feedback to consider 64bit Vista Ultimate. (I've got a copy I haven't done anything with.

The video card won't be critical for a while. (The AGP card manufacturer has replaced it with a fairly decent Nvidia 7900 based PCI card.) I'll upgrade it eventually but I still want to keep it to something that will fit within the SG-01.

I'm bracing for the onslaught of lightning claws, assault cannon, gauss flayers, etc., and promise to take all criticism constructively. I'll stress that the only thing I've bought so far is the motherboard so I'm not completely off my rocker. I've read the posts by many of you over the last year and have found some of you to be mindbogglingly knowledgeable about matx.

Many thanks,

Jim

don't know why your bracing for the onslaught... sounds like a pretty solid build.
You have a pretty clear understanding of what your needs are and are finding appropriate hardware solutions.
rock on.

Thanks for the reply.

Any suggestions on memory to go with the QX9650 processor and the P5E-VM HDMI? The board supports 1333 speeds and I'm wrestling with which way to go.

Jim
