so basically, i OC'ed my 9540 to 3ghz as a starting point. Im getting mid to high 40's running high idle (music, uploading data to a server, etc). My main question is regarding my ram. It is PC28500 but it is showing up as 6400. Why is that? Also, i am running the cpu/mem 1:1. Is that smart? I don't want to go crazy on the OC because i rather have a very rock solid stable system but i feel like I can make this system tighter and im wasting the ram speed/capability.

thanks!

PS. I have an MSI Neo FR2 P35 board

Is this your ACTUAL RAM speed you're talking about or the information that the program is getting from your chip? (I can't see the pictures) When you set your memory divider to 1:1 manually, you are underclocking your RAM. Also, many DDR1066 (PC2 8500) chips are simply PC2 6400 chips that have been overclocked from the factory and will show up as such.

i purchased 4GB of Patriot PC2-8500 Ram. but clearly, as you said, it was just 6400 ram that is CAPABLE of running at 8500 and sold by Patriot as merely PC8500.

so since i am running 1:1 at 375fsb my ram is only running at 750? i think my cpu with my cooling should be able to hit at least 3.2 stable without increasing the cpucore much. also, since my ram is "underclocked" it should be able to have tighter timings, right?

PS. why can't you see the photos? =)

Well I have a P35-DS3R and Mushkin PC2-8000 ram (also shows up as PC2-6400 in CPUID). I am able to run at 3.6GHz on my Q9450 with out any problems and I can have the memory run at 1080MHz (2.4x) or 1125MHz (2.5x).
You might want to check your memory multiplier...
Since you have 375MHz right now...your memory is running 1:1 with your FSB, on my P35-DS3R the 1:1 corresponds to a memory multiplier of 2. So if you want your memory to run faster, you will need to set a higher multiplier like 2.5 or even 3 (such that its 2:2.5, or 2:3)

Also, i am running the cpu/mem 1:1. Is that smart? I don't want to go crazy on the OC because i rather have a very rock solid stable system but i feel like I can make this system tighter and im wasting the ram speed/capability.

You can certainly run the RAM at a higher speed using the RAM multiplier in the BIOS, however you will not see a lot of gains past running it at 1:1. Go try it for yourself, got into the CORE setting in the BIOS (where you overclock your CPU) and you can set your RAM multiplier right in there. It defaults to AUTO. Also when you do this, you may need to increase your RAM voltage to what is specified by the manufacturer.

While you are in there, enable EIST, this turns on Speed Step which clocks down your multiplier when its idle or at low load so you use a lot less power when you are just surfing the net and stuff, and your system will run cooler. If you picked your own multiplier, you can not enable EIST.

my old post i am bumping... =)

wanted to get some more life out of my cpu....still running my q9450 @ 3ghz at mid 40's idle temps. I feel like it can do more!

any specific tips? Have the same mobo, cpu, ram

thanks!
