Budget: $2,000 tops

I play Counter-Strike: Source mostly (any Valve games too), a lot of FarCry online, and I like using resolutions from 1280x960 and above.

The processor must be at least LGA775 650 (3.4ghz) - 670 (3.8ghz) Or one of those Smithfield dual cores if you want to make me change my mind.

Motherboard must have one PCI-Express x16 slot for an X800 XL. Not running an SLI system.

Chipset has to be at least 925XE or above, and has to be the best one for overclocking and stability.

Heatsink: I plan on pushing one of those babies to past 4Ghz on air cooling. Noise isn't an issue since I'm hearing impaired (In english, deaf)

Case: Already picked out, Antec P-180.

Hard drive: Already have hard drives.

DDR2 RAM: 2GB least (i don't care about the timings, just let me have room for OCing)

PSU: Active PCF, please. Least 480w.

NOTE: Make sure it'd be a good PC for heavy 3d gaming. I tend to multitask sometimes so do they have good HyperThreading shit? Plus I host dedicated servers a lot for fun for CS1.6 and shit like that.

I know I went cheap on the processor.

3 reasons:

1. b/c I think you should wait a little longer and then upgrade to a .65nm Pressler dual core chip when they arrive. Hopefully, by then you'll get a dual core around 4Ghz that won't take water cooling to chill. So might as well save some money now, and get a better chip maybe early next year.

2. b/c all the 600 series are N0 stepping chips and hit 4+Ghz on air easily. Any 600 series chip will reach about same OC, however the lower ones will give you a higher FSB, like back in the 2.4C days.

3. Maybe use the extra money to buy a 7800GTX and sell that X800XL that you have.

In the red squared area, do I just plug in a 4-pin connector directly from the PSU as if it was a video card?

Please note that I've never built a Socket T or even an intel PC before.

K I added all the shit you listed out for me, w/ TT 560w Active PCF and a P4 650 3.4ghz though. Totals out to 1,080 dollars. Great! Time for a video card.

I think thats just a supplemental 4-pin molex that you can connect to supply extra power. Read the manual as it may only be needed if you're missing one of the other plugs on your PSU. IE: only a 20 pin instead of 24 pin.
 
Since noise isn't an issue, go for some Vantec Tornados. Those babies move some AIR! I bet you could easily hit 4GHz with an XP-120 and a Tornado.
 
4Ghz should be easy with ANY fan hooked up to that monster heatsink. I'd get a low rpm fan, or one with a rheostat (controller) so you can adjust the speed. So you won't irritate your guests.

Show us some pics and benchmarks when you get it hooked up & installed.

If thats 'Too Much' Exchange the 840EE for a normal 840 or a 660 and youll be ok and still have a sweet system. The Zalman is an all in one solution, easy to use, and will cool it very well. The RAM may look cheap but i have 2GB of it and its smokin fast and overclocks to 700MHZ! The ASUS board is hands down the best OCing board and most stable out there.
 
Dillusion, thanks for giving it a shot. I know I said tops $2k for the pc, but I want to save as much money as possible. I should be allright with a 650 and the ASUS motherboard w/ 945 intel chipset listed by chrisf6969. What's the difference between 945 and 955 anyway?
Plus Zalman CNPS7700cu is built for silence.. I want the loudest and most air sucking fans as possible.

Well if you wanna save as much money as possible, i would STILL go with the 955X chipset, if you dont wanna spend 220$ on the ASUS P5WD2, go for the ABIT AW8, thats like 185$ @ newegg and its an awesome board, and only 20-30$ more than the 945.

The 650 should be fine, yes, ide also recommend it.

If you dont wanna sleep at night, get an XP-120 with a 120MM Vantec Tornado on it, and your set! 45c load max!

955 has support for ECC ram and I think 8Gb total and supposedly some memory optimization, but from benchmarks it seems like it has VERY LITTLE IMPACT even on synthetic memory benchmarks.

945 doesn't support ECC ram and "only" 4Gb total (I believe)

Similar to 925 vs 915, and 875 vs 865 in the past. (very little difference in performance, but sometimes big differences in price)

therefore, i am the one who will be buyin him a system within few weeks if possible. i owe him a lot thing in the past o well. He's deaf (me 2), and he doesn't need silence fan lol. He demands lot of power out of his system. :D

Edit: I don't mind to give up my 92mm tornado to him and buy him XP-90c for his first intel gaming system.

Exactly right. The XP-90c is superior per Thermalright - I emailed them directly about the same debate. They are contemplating an XP-120c but would not confirm its existence.

Great, another 90$ heatsink, an already 60$ XP-120 with copper and a 'c' after its name....:D

I would assume they release one to tackle zalmans CNPS9500 series, which is supposed to perform better than low end WCing

You said you want multitasking and game performance? How could you go wrong with and AMD X2 4200+ or 4400+? No one here will deny the complete domination in gaming, and multitasking with two cores is insane. Or if you really want to save money, there is that 2.8GHz Pentium D :rolleyes:

Well, since the title was "Help with a decent Intel system." and this is in the Intel Processors forum. Maybe that's not what he's looking for. Besides see his sig... he's currently got an A64.

I think the 600 series P4 (especially if OC'd to 4Ghz) will give hime good gaming performance. And the 945 mobo will give him a nice upgrade path in the future to .65nm dual core.

Now if this was the AMD processors forum and he was asking about building a system and wanted multitasking & gaming. I'd say go for the X2 4400. But currently the only multi tasking chips AMD have are the X2's.

Where any P4 with Hyperthreading gives you great multi-tasking "free" (not $600 just to get it).

$60?? Yikes! I only paid $39.95 for my 'c'. My temps on the Asus are pretty much inline with some folks I know using water (standard, non-esoteric setups) in similarly clocked rigs.

And the cheap 'Mad Dog' 92mm fan I'm using from CUSA seems to be quieter than the high-dollar 92x38 'quiet' Delta at similiar temps. The delta sits in a box now.

It's okay guys, let him speak. Though I know AMD X2s are great, but I was raised with AMD all my fucking life. I really want to taste Intel though. It's never too late, since I can always get AMD M2 or the 1207-pin monster while I have an Intel rig that'd be upgradeable to 65nm and play around with it.

Oh, I'm a lurker. Any "Hey, I've been thinking about trying out Intel" thread seems to invite "InHell sUx0rs" responses, then seems to go off topic.
Anyway, Chrisf6969's suggestion looks dead on to me. I know noise isn't an issue here, but with a budget that the OP has, I would look into a WC solution as well for an increased chance of a good overclock and peace of mind (as far as temps go). Ya never know when the honey foo-foo will complain about the jet engine in your room.
 
Another user said to go with vantec tornados and trust me dont do it !!!!! lol you have no idea how loud they are its just insane. I can be in my kitchen which is a long ways from my computer room and hear them going over a tv blasting and thats no joke. I would have to use headphones and crank up the volume to drown the sound of them out. Just plain silly fans for freaks... btw I yanked them out after 1 week

I've been using a Zalman CNPS 7000Cu and a CNPS 7000CuAl. Even looked at the 7700 and 9500s for the same reason, low noise and good performance. Set to 70% in my IC7-G's BIOS. Even while overclocked mine is never noisey. My wife often turns hers off, she can't hear it running. Old 1.7 Willy LOL!

Tornados suck IMHO and I don't like Noisey systems/Fans=P Noise is an Issue to me but only because I think noisey fans are silly when there are tons of quiet fans out there. Hell, I won a Quiet Fan lighted Antec fan from some site I don't even remember the name of hehehe! I think it was a give away more than an actual prise.

I know of several guys running 3GHz P4 at 3.6GHz or faster with these same Zalmans, mine is on the low setting. I personally know another poster on the forum running an overclocked system with the Z-7K at low RPMS (2.6C@3.25GHz). Tornados and Fans like them are silly (IMHO), too bad folks who use them try to get others to make the same bad choice. Last but not least, their value is overrated IMHO. Some SFF come with Heatpipe or self contained liquid cooling that works get. The CoolerMaster selfcontained water cooling kit would be a great idea if its 120MM Fan/Radiator fits. MaxPC liked it and I've never been disappointed with their choices.

Ive NEVER used anything besides Zalman and Thermalright (In my early n00b days ill admit i had a Thermaltake Volcano Socket A :D) but the only two thermalright products ive owned are the XP90 (754), SK-7 (462), and an SLK948U (Which was awesome btw). After those 3 which were used sparingly, you can NEVER beat zalmans sub-40$ coolers that are DEAD silent and awesome for the price! Ive personally owned 3 7000AlCu's and 2 AlCu LED's and they are superb. I always overclock and through all the processors ive owned (754, 939, 478, 775) which is ALLOT of processors, it always keeps them cool. All my friends have them aswell, and i will keep my loyalty to zalman when the 9500 comes out, and oh will it be sweet. :)

Yes, when folks talk about how all of the very models you're talking about, many think we're Zalman salespeople LOL! You can't beat them price wise, I bouth my last 7K CuAl with the lighted fan for something like $27 from Directron and 3 other parts wer 9.95 shipping.

My I have one (Z-7KCu) waiting for the next Sc-939 I'll build as well. I don't have anything worthy a 9500 though.
